Blanking EGR valves
How many people have blanked off there EGR valves?
Had to replace one recently due to a lack of power, totally undriveable. When the valve was removed, this is what I found...

The whole head of the valve was no where to be found. Dont know if it had burned away or broken up, but whatever happened, it must have been taken back through the engine...

Or the bit dropped onto the floor when it was removed In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The valve head wouldn't fit up the pipework to the throttle valve, so little chance of it going into the engine. If it had gone into a cylinder you'd know about it!Previously:

I was a bit more concerned about it breaking up into little pieces and being drawn through the engine...

Trust me, you would know if the remaining missing part went through the engine. It goes straight into the cylinder, its pot luck which one it will go in as the induction will suck it up. Once in there, the piston, liner and rings will fail..........
this happened to me on a Vectra V6, totally new engine to sort.........
So if you get no strange noises under acceleration/load then it fell out when removing it, and yes I agree to reove these poxy valves. they are ok whilst in warrenty, after that rip them out. I had them in my old TD5, removed them and my economy and power flew up.
Once mine is out of warranty mine are difinately being blanked. Has anybody on here done it?

Dumb question time - If they fill with crud and reduce power etc, why the do LR fit them??
EDIT - Just read the link above 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Its even easier than in the link. You dont have to remove the throttle butterfly, just fit the 2 blanking plates on the valve and pipes.

Thought that if the butterfly closes shut it will starve the engine of air ?

Unless the valve has broken up it won't get into the engine as the exhaust gasses pass through a narrow venturi behind the butterfly valve
depending on the orientation of the valve, it'll either be jammed in the EGR pipework or dropped into the exhaust and probably be sat in the CAT

From the other thread :
Quote:
The butterfly strangles the engine intake and forces it to ingest exhaust gases. Removing it definitely improves/removes the typical hesitation you can get for instance on roundabouts - basically the butterfly will be causing the turbo to spin down through lack of airflow through the engine.

The turbo spin down has more to do with loss of RPM as it it is driven by exhaust gasses.
And yes the butterfly has a big roll to play in it, but you must bear in mind how this was
made to work. By removing only the butterfly you have only solved 50% of the hesitation
problem IMHO, as the inlet will still suck exhaust gasses when the EGR's open.
By blanking the EGR's also, will give you only clean air and more response.
I've have blanked off mine for sole purpose of preventing any unwanted crap
getting into the inlet system and prolonging the life of my engine.D3 bullbar-spots-roof rack with spots-ladder-long range tank-swing out spare wheel carrier- upgraded tow bar-dash console-internal water tank-duel awnings-drawer system & T T.

Doesn't matter what rpm is doing, if the butterfly valve is shut then the air flow is hugely reduced - and a turbo spins on airflow, normally this increases with rpm obviously but the butterfly valve is there >just< to reduce the clean air inflow and force the engine to chew the recirculated exhaust fumes...if you blank the egr and don't remove the butterfly then the engine has nothing to ingest.Cheers
