towbar electrics

Can someone tell me why I need to have the Landrover wiring kit and am not able to fit one myself, and also if the car does not have its software updated for the addition of a towbar, will I crash?

cheers tightwad

I have seen a Disco3 that hard been wired straight in no wiring kit.

Blew the ecu & its a wonder it didn't catch fire.

Not just L/R most modern cars are running on Canbus / Multiplex electrics.

Bypass any big trouble.

Just by the wiring from "The Large One" aka Nick here on the forum (details in sticky at top of group buy forum), it plugs straight in and cables are all right length and plug mounts into chassis hole.

Apparently if you bodge one in you can blow stuff up on modern cars due to ECU controlled everything, I would not know about that as I splashed the cash on the proper kit Whistle

Without the software update, the D3 will still select offroad height if you say turn the terrain response to grass, which is not good if you have a caravan on the back (no problem if you have only a bike rack). If you have the update it will not auto-select offroad heigh on TR mode, but you can ask it to do it anyway.

Just buy the real LR kit, if nothing else it will disable the reversing sensors when you put it in reverse while towing!!!
Disco3 is now gone but not forgotten. Waiting for Disco6 with full aluminium construction weight reduction and hybrid engine...

As everyone says...don't try to fit anything other than genuine....

You can fit the electrics yourself ...should take about an hour...it's says on the instructions to enable via a dealer...that does not need doing at this point...wait till you visit your dealer for service or warranty work to have enabled

fit original,

programs the intstruments for trailer and also lights, as far as i am aware the fog lights on the rear of the veh will then not work when trailer is connected, also i think it stops you selscting off road height, Surprised

I know I am not a techy and fairly new on here ..... Tow bars and ECU's Shocked Shocked

Wonder if any other newbies knew of the ECU update when one is fitted Question

Had my adjustable tow bar removed whilst it was in at the Indy for a few things ..... when paying he stated ECU had been updated to reverse things back as the D3 no longer had a tow bar fitted....

I never knew Rolling Eyes obviously Whistle

So for all other newbies ...might be worth checking into if you have had a tow bar fitted/removed recently and also didn't realise Rolling Eyes

All the update does is stop the D3 from going into off-road height automatically when you select a terrain response setting ( as this can cause the back of a trailer to ground) and also stops the parking sensors coming on when you select reverse, but only when you have the trailer electrics plugged in from the trailer. So if you have your tow bar removed, it makes no difference. Your indie may have updated the CCF, but it won't have taken him long and all it means is that if you ever tow anything the above things will annoy you. Nothing sinister Smile

Parking sensors work with / without a trailer, no need for the CCF change.

Does anyone know how much they cost? As one of my trailer side lights don't work so presumably the kit needs replacing... Rolling Eyes

Assuming you've done the obvious and checked the bulb....Check the trailer electrics fuses, inside the LH rear cubby / compartment, there's an inline fuse block.

I totally agree, there is no option but to fit the genuine LR kit, it works peffectly, i know of too many peoplewho try to save by using other types but come unstuck. it took just on the hour to fit, looks great and being totally fused any triler issues are arrested within the fused system.

Easy job. Just follow the included instructions.
