Coil whine - MY16 D4 Infotainment |
|
Ok folks this is a long shot, but has anyone experienced issues with what sounds like excessive "coil whine" in the cabin coming from the CD player / head unit area of the dash?
This is a high pitched electronic squeal which starts as soon as the car wakes up (engine not running) and only stops when the radio etc goes to sleep. It's nothing to do with alternator whine or anything like that, nor is it related to the usual whirs, clicks and buzzes from the ECU's under the hood.
I've had the D4 since new and the noise has always been there... but never bothersome enough to get a JLR warranty check. Now either the noise is getting worse, or my hearings getting better!
I will be keeping the car until bits start falling off and it's our family long hauler... Hampshire to Scotland, the Alps and beyond. I've also made lots of tweaks and additions over the years (Altox FBH, ACC, lazer lamps, CarPlay, mild remap, side steps, LEDs everywhere etc), so this is now one of the niggles I want to try and sort out for the longer term...
Any clues or ideas before I start opening up the dash? The noise is definitely loudest around the CD player slot...

aux socket got anything plugged in ?
I seem to recall someone (might even have been Martin) suggesting making up a plug to short-out the aux connection to kill buzzing noise.

Thanks. Nothing in the aux, and never used it, but I’ll have a look for the relevant post. Cheers.
To be clear, this isn’t a noise from the speakers, but a very high pitched electronic type noise, like an old CRT telly or transformer. Difficult to describe - I might try and post a video
