Sea sickness medication

Hi all, over the Christmas period I will be midway through a South America and Antarctica cruise with Holland America on the Oosterdam (small/medium ship max about 1900 passengers). Will be our 4th cruise in 2yrs and would say I have reasonable sea legs from past trips on ferries and yachts but can't read in a car !! Anyway, as some time will be cruising in Antarctica and Cape Horn/ Drakes Passage looking to play safe and have some sickness medication to hand. Have used Stugeron in the past just incase but not really tested. Heard about Scopoderm patches which are not cheap! I know it can be a bit personal but any thoughts from seasoned sailors or pharmacists ? Thanks Gareth

Hi Gareth

Your trip sounds amazing.

No advice on medication as it is not something I have ever needed as an offshore sailor in my younger years. Many people who crewed with us used the wristbands which act on pressure points to avoid/reduce symptoms. The people wearing them said they were effective.

Good luck.
 Cheers,

Jez

I find Kwells very effective and quick acting, but I like to take them before getitng on the water. Tends to give me a mild 'out of body' experience for the first half hour, but then the body gets used to it. I've been out in some serious swelly stuff which I culd enjoy! Kwells only lasts about six hours, so other longer term medication may be more suitable. The more time I spend in the salty stuff the less affected I seem to be getting, which is nice - just hope it stays that way.

Thanks for the replies. May take a couple of different brands if they have different ingredients although there does seem to be one main ingredient.

Have a look at Gravol ... I don't think it's readily available in the UK, but you're heading further afield so maybe available? Maybe has a different name here?

SWMBO swears by it for flying BUT it can be too relaxing ... 2 will zonk her out.

However, might be ideal for the longer out-at-sea stretches if you're faced with little to look at other than wave after wave Laughing
