New to me D4

Bought a one owner 108k miles 2010 D4 XS. Rides better than my wife's 2021 D300 Defender and has much more space. Lots of issues to sort, but really like it.

That's interesting. I've not had my D4 very long but have obviously been thinking about what's next in a few years' time and a Defender was likely to be top of the list. Apart from the fancy electronics it sounds like it would be a downgrade.

We bought the Defender new in 2021. It was fine at first, but soon started developing faults, fixed thankfully under warranty:

Wind noise around A pillars - which took 4 attempts to fix
Auxiliary belt replaced 3 times
Squeaky door seals - no permanent fix
Reversing camera failed
Starter motor failed, luckily at home
Fuel pump failed whilst driving. The car stopped, locked itself in park and blocked the single track road in and out of my housing estate

All this happened in 3 years and 30,000 miles. I've had 5 Range Rovers over the years and I would say the build quality on the Defender is several notches down on the RR's. I realise the D4 is no paragon of reliability, but that's easier to take in a £10k car than a £75k car!

The interior of the D4 is way bigger than the Defender 110, by the way

Funny, I've been looking at going back to a D4 from a Defender. I really like my Defender. It rides well, it's super smooth, has a cracking engine, it's a great place to sit and for me at two years old and 34,000 miles has been very reliable. Build quality I think is good but not a patch on my XC90, which was exceptional.

My biggest bug bear is the boot size and side opening rear door. I thought id get over it but haven't. I was using my daughter's D3 when she was on her gap year. Brilliant car. Sadly she sold it. Wish we'd kept it now. Big Cry

That would be a serious dealbreaker for me. So I checked on carsized (which is fab btw):

https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/l...-suv/rear/

Despite being 18.9cm longer, 9.3cm wider, and 8cm taller, the Defender has 474 litres less luggage space with the seats up, or 683 litres less with the seats down ! That's an absolutely huge difference.

Seats up, there's actually slightly more space in the boot of a RRS (835 litres vs. 786 litres) !
