My D3 TDV8 build.
I did have a thread for my D3 but haven’t updated it for a while.
Back in March 2020 just before lock down kicked in I picked up my D3 it is an S spec model that was only two owners (father and son) had been supplied by our local Land Rover dealer originally and had stacks of history.
Paid £2k for it as it had a handbrake fault and a suspension issue, I took a punt as it had previously had a handbrake module fitted and being a manual I suspected the handbrake issue was either a gear position switch fault or at worst case a clutch issue.
Day I collected it.

The handbrake issue was sorted just by recalibrating the gear position sensor, and a rebuild kit for the compressor sorted the suspension issue.
After that I ran it using it as my daily and to tow my trailer with track car, provided to be a good little camper too for trips to track days

Last summer it started to use some water and my plan was over last winter to do the head gasket, but I spotted a cheapish Range Rover Sport at a local car auction which I bought to liberate its TDV8 engine.

The original plan was to do the work last winter into the start of this year, but I’ve got side tracked fixing other peoples cars I’ve only got a Saturday to do stuff, and I’ve also I’ve had a fair few trips away including two euro road trips so progress has been slow.
I’ve now got back on track in part having had a massive workshop sort out to give myself more space, the Sport is split now with the shell on a dolly on my 4 post lift and the chassis underneath it.

I’ve also got the body off the Discovery chassis which was a lot quicker having already done it on the Sport, engine gearbox and transfer case are all now out of the Discovery chassis too.

Next step is to give the Discovery chassis a wash and then I’m going to clean up the rusty parts of of it and treat them to some Buzzweld rust encapsulator paint, then give the entire chassis a coat of CIO.
I’ll clean the floor of the shell up and give it a similar paint treatment.
I’ll try and keep the thread updated with progress.

Is this going to be the first TDV8 manual? Is that even a possibility?

It is going to be an Auto it was the only downside of the D3 that it was a manual, my wife only drives Autos these days because if joint problems so making the D3 an auto gives her a backup car if there are any issues with her D4.

Made a bit more progress over the weekend and got the exhaust and loom of the Discovery.

I need to decide what to do on the chassis I want to clean it up and paint it but I am tempted to see if I can find someone local to blast it for me to speed up the cleaning process.

Given the two cars use the same chassis (?), would it be easier to just swap the shells, put the Disco body on the RRS chassis ? So you wouldn't need to mess with the mechanical bits at all, just deal with whatever wiring etc. goes between chassis & body.
You would of course end up with an unsaleable Disco because the logbook says it's a RRS and that would look sketchy AF

The D4 chassis is a good few inches longer than the RRS so that plan doesn’t really work!!Disco 4

As sailormike says the Discovery chassis is longer than the RRS one I’ll try and get a picture of the two chassis looms to show this as it does show it quite well.

Please note that RRS exhaust mounted in Discovery must be made few inches longer too Discovery3 TDV8 HSE
