Rotary Gear selector
I've been having the usual intermittent rotary gear selector issue with my 65 plate D4 HSE Lux recently.
I’d read about it on here in the past, so knew I could sort it out, but hadn’t really realised what a complete pain it is to remove the selector.
It involves a lot of disassembly just to get at, when in fact the four screws holding it in are just under one piece of trim, and it could come out from the top.
But that piece of trim is held down by screws from underneath, and a couple of lugs on the terrain control panel.
So to get to the screws for the trim piece you have to upend the whole assembly.
I stripped it down without disconnecting anything electrically, turned the ignition back on, and split the selector case just enough to slide a Costa wooden stirring stick in and slide the lock back. (Other popular Coffee brands are available and probably supply equally useful stirring sticks).
That enabled me to get the gearbox into park and test it a few times.
It’s working OK at the moment, but I’ll strip it again at the weekend and install a fishing line emergency release under the cupholders.
Talking of stripping it again, I’ve modified the top trim and not replaced it’s screws so it can just be slipped out and the selector unit removed in 30seconds without taking half the inside of the car to bits.
This involves slotting the holes in the trim piece that locate over lugs on the underside of the Terrain Control Panel, and removing a small location lug that sits up against the shift control housing.
It is nicely held in place without the screws, and I’m surprised it wasn’t designed with clips from the top in the first place.
Obviously I’ve every intention of putting it back together properly at some stage, but at the moment whilst I’m unsure if I’ll be back in there again anytime soon it can stay just pushed in place.
I'm planning on replacing the unit but have a few questions based on sourcing a used one.
Is the known issue limited to certain years of manufacture?
Is the D4 selector the same as other LR models of the same time of manufacture?
Are they backwards and forwards compatible if they look the same?
Etc?
TaHeaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

Thanks gstuart
Unfortunately I need the car every day, so don't have the option of sending the current one away for repair or refurbish.
But rest assured it will get done when I've put a replacement in.
Then I'll put the original refurbished one back in and keep the one brought as a replacement just in case.Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.
