Retrofit Heated Steering Wheel

Hi, just tried fitting a heated steering wheel to my 2012MY Disco. The heater switches on and the switch lights up red, steering wheel gets warm. All good this far, however, the switches are all mixed up or do not operate and the flappy paddles are disabled. The ecu in the steering wheel is an early one rather than the later one. I would have assumed that it should just be plug and play. Any ideas? Could the switch packs be knackered?

Thanks all.

I feel your pain, went through all this a year or so ago! As well as having to have the steering wheel ECU from the correct vintage car (and well done for finding one, older ones seem to be elusive) the right hand switch pack where the heated wheel switch sits must also be from the correct vintage. If you have the switch pack from a 2014 or later car it will physically fit and plug in, but will cause exactly this sort of problem. I also had the paddles disabled and had to find an older switch pack on eBay, then everything just worked.

I did try contacting LR to find out how to differentiate older switch packs from newer based on part number. Don’t bother, they deny that anything ever changed. The way to tell is I believe by the horn icon. Pre 2014 packs have a little raised dome with a horn symbol printed on them. Later ones are different - either an embossed horn or just paint with no dome, I can’t remember.

Good luck!

Definitely a PITA. The part numbers looked promising, from an older car etc. At least I know the heating element, switch and ECU works, just need the switch packs now. Rolling Eyes knew it was too good to be true.

Just fitted remote heating module which work, just need the warm hands now! Will keep an eye out for switch packs.

For the ones on my original wheel? The right pack on the heated wheel has a flat wire going into it. I’ve not opened the packs up to see what’s inside though.

I assume your original RH switch pack doesn’t have the heated wheel switch? If you swap that back on and everything else starts working again then the new RH switch pack is the culprit. You should be able to keep your original LH pack as it has no involvement with the heated wheel on early cars.

Interesting. I did try plugging my left hand switch pack in but then nothing worked. I assumed the packs needed to be changed in pairs. So in theory, I just need a working right hand heated wheel compatible switch pack.

Sounds promising.

Cheers

Yes that’s right. When I fitted mine I needed a new RH switch pack and a wheel ECU, both of the correct vintage. I’m still using my original LH switch pack and everything works fine!

By the way, I found that the switch pack from a similar vintage Range Rover Sport was 100% compatible which widened my choice on eBay. See posts on the thread “Switch pack variations -heated steering wheel” for more details if that helps.

Appreciate the assistance. I might try and plug the right hand pack into my existing steering wheel and see what happens. The wheel is from a 2011 RRS I believe so I was assuming, incorrectly lol, that it would just be plug and play. There is a RH pack on eBay at the moment but it's nearly 200 quid and might not even work. No rush I suppose, although it has been quite chilly the past couple of days!
