to buy or not (which?) new member

Hi all, first post/new member.
I have hada Mk 1 disco yrs ago (great motor), bobtail landrover and RRs, but never a modern Disco (know nothing except "dont buy one", "air susp is cr*p") etc. Looking at these 2 (I have discounted a D3 - 'correctly' ??

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2...mp;fromsra

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/286074621053?pl...;recoPos=1

The cheaper one has a few bits 'done' albeit miles ago. The dearer one has all these bits to be done. What are the common faults at these milages? BELTS means timing belts (chain or rubber????), Yes?

Money is not really a problem, but one is 5+ newer. I am 72 so self-spannering is really out of the Q. I have been looking at Austin Champs over the past 6 months £10k to £16K. These are my passion, first as a kid at 18 (£250!), but impracticale with health and age issues.

ANY advice observations PLEASE. Hope to be joing the fraternity soon ! Cheers lads/lasses

I’d recommend reading as much as you can about D3/4’s on this forum.

Great vehicles, but the newest is now getting on for 8 years old and there’s a lot more to go wrong than on a regular car.

If it were me, I’d go for the youngest one I could afford with a comprehensive service history. I’d be less concerned about mileage.

Good luck Thumbs Up

You need to read up, probably here, on belt changes, upgrading/replacing the oil pump, gearbox power flushes etc...

This would have ben ideal IMHO but sold:-

No mention of belt changes, air suspension etc though. What are the recommendations for these things (milage etc).

Hi John, and welcome to the mad house…

Don’t be frightened of mileage, as long as there is also history to back it up - personally, I’d prefer a high mileage one that has clearly been ‘the boss’s car’ and done motorway miles to meetings, whilst also being well maintained.

I bought one recently which just looked right - it was still on original brand tyres all round and was straight looking… with 185k on the clock. That was October and we’ve just trickled over the 200k mark during which time I’ve done belts (mainly precautionary as that was the one thing I couldn’t find in the history) and a full set of oil and filters.

Mine is a 16MY (65 plate) Commercial but the good ones are certainly out there if you look.

What you really, really don’t want is someone who has bought the D4 for image, paying Mondeo money for it and then serviced it on the cheap, using Halfords or corner garages for cheapest possible services…

Good luck!

Also… the first one you show has been heavily modified. Do you want anything like that (where there are mods, there is a risk of stuff being non-standard…) or something more akin to ex-factory?

What about this one:

https://www.primoris4x4.co.uk/vehicle/land...oup=modern

Seems priced in line with your first suggestion, has full history (including belts) and the chap at Primoris is an absolute star to deal with - our daughter had a D3 from him many years back and he’s first class…

my daughter has just bought an Evoque from these guys, father and son little dealership on a trading estate in Chesterfield both really nice genuine guys. They change cambelts etc on all Freelander, Evoque and provide full service and invoices to back it up so IMO they are very rare and decent trader.

Hope it hasn’t got the infamous 2ltr explodium diesel engine or you may be Big Cry soon.

no its the last of the 2.2 on a 65 plate with a full LR service history so shes ok

me on the other hand might not be as ive just got a DS with the explodium engine Whistle Thud Laughing

however the history on mine is comprehensive and no sign of it exploding so far. My brother has had his DS for over 3 years now with no issues so I view it as a bit like the D4 crank issues........... how many % wise have actually broken compared to numbers sold making it a lottery for D4 or DS but my warranty covers it for the next 2 years so ill take my chances (im stupid i know Rolling with laughter )

Read, read and read from here.

Does EU6 make a difference? Adblu need etc? ULEZ and the like?

Service history and from whom.

Put a few hundred away each month, not a warranty that won't cover what the few hundred will in months to come.

Find what suits you and enjoy it.

Drive it too, these cars hate to sit around. They also hate poor or low battery charge so invest in a tow bar charger plug like this (assuming you buy one with towbar electrics?) and keep the battery tippety top.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373038718031

I think they might be available in the shop above but not last time I looked.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Do you have to have the caravan towing socket for that charger to work, or is it for a standard trailer socket? Thank you.

As what others have said, read up on here for what to look for and what’s good/bad for them.

Then buy the newest example with the best history and mot history you can.

I bought a last of the line 2016 Landmark 2 months ago.
It had excellent mot history and the owner had a comprehensive history of the car.
From auto box service, to the belts being done, brakes all done and even fresh Pirelli scorpion zero tyres fitted.

There were plenty of polished up examples with dodgy history, poor mot history with repeating advisories coming up, budget tyres fitted etc.

Be picky.

I went for mine as it’s LEZ compliant which was future proofing for us.

It’s a brilliant car, it’s clean all over, it drives beautifully and has clearly been loved by its previous owners.
 In loving memory of FA54WSK.

Rest well old friend, your work is done.

It plugs into the rear electric socket. Either you need an adapter or it fits straight off (depends upon the amount of pins).

I use one on the rear electrics socket that fits my motorbike trailer and also towbar mounted cycle rack.
