Slight update…. Have now replaced the fuel rail using a genuine part which comes with the fuel pressure sensor affixed.. without tempting fate it may have fixed the issue.. car definitely responds differently and despite trying to provoke it to go into limp home mode over the last couple of days it is finally behaving..
I know this is too soon to be certain and I promise to report back…
It has definitely done something as the car now drives differently.. there is more of a very slight hesitation before giving you power when pressing the accelator so sensor is definitely telling the car to do something differently than before…

I was about to try this today, as I have a very similar problem, but I don't seem to have a sensor We're they not fitted to early engines, or am I looking in the wrong place ?

On early (EU3) engines it is fitted to the diverter rail at the back of the engine with the HPFP. It is from this sensor that the high pressure fuel is monitored, and it's performance can be provisionally observed with a diagnostic tool. GAP>"live values">Engine>Fuel pressure. The original sensor does not seem to be available but there are other versions and aftermarket ones out there, all of which you take your chances with in terms of success.
If you want the original OEM sensor you have to buy the complete rail with the sensor already fitted.
What exactly is the problem you are trying to solve? The FRPS can cause problems if it's faulty, but, it does rarely fail so bear this in mind before you bite the bullet. You can get some idea of its operating performance by watching the fuel pressure fluctuations whilst raising the RPM, or better still whilst driving and watching the pressure under load.
The bare minimum for the injectors to fire is 150Bar and the max output of the HPFP is 1650Bar.
So at idle you should be seeing fuel pressure in the region of 230Bar with the VCV and PCV valves in the HPFP at approximately 21.87% & 13.67% respectively. The Mass air flow should be between 15 and 19 g/s. These values will obviously change according to load and rpm. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I occasionally go into limp mode under load. After watching the video earlier in this thread I thought for the price I would give it a go.
