Close shave
Driving to work Monday morning after a weekend of green laning, and the front left wheel disintegrated! Shearing all the bolts.
Luckily no one was hurt, except my bank balance to get highways England to remove the car; I was in the fast lane.
Not sure whether or not to buy another 20" and a new tyre, or bite the bullet and fit some 18"s with a 60 or 65 side profile.

Yup
Tyres were fitted by previous owner and are 275/45/20, could possibly be part of the problem.

Wheel spacer studs made from chinesium sheared off and the wheel grinded against brake disc until it came apart?Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue

It's a possibility but they are Terrfirma, which are a trusted brand here in the UK.

Apologies if this is naive.
I've so often found wheel nuts tightnened HORRIBLY over ANYTHING LIKE a sensible torque.
Sometimes I've wondered do studs sometimes shear for this reason ?

I think they are the diamond cut version of the wheels my D4 had, so look genuine to me. Possibly a stone trapped in the calliper has cut through the rim first? Then the wheel split and carnage ensued! Luckily nobody hurt.

Are they spacers? Looks like sheared bolts and a few hung on, finally letting go with devastating consequences

That picture through the wheel certainly makes it look like the disc has ground through the wheel, and the spacer wheel studs have clearly sheared at some point, while the factory studs have remained in place.Previously:

Another things to note. The remains of the sheared off wheel rim, shows a lot of wear and pitting on the tyre bead seating. Looks like the tyre was scrubbing on its seating.

can't specifically blame them on this, but looking at a car with a known weak spot in terms of front wheel bearings, why people think it's a good idea to fit them I don't know.Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.
