Me too, def the spacers.
Been running wider tyres on all my D3/FL2 & D4s for many many miles and never had any issues.
Never touched spacers though, as that the sort of thing I feared could happen.

And 275 wide = invalid insurance! It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Apologies if this is naive.
I've so often found wheel nuts tightnened HORRIBLY over ANYTHING LIKE a sensible torque.
Sometimes I've wondered do studs sometimes shear for this reason ?
I think it's likely that the tightening torque on the wheel nuts (too hard or too loose) was a contributing factor. Would be interesting to check the other three wheels.
Could also be caused by previously mis-torqued nuts causing the studs to free up in the spacer aluminium and not creating a consistent clamping force on the wheel which over time started to loosen the nuts.Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue

Car came with the tyres, which I have wanted to replace since buying, but there was plenty of tread left so I was holding off for them to wear out a bit more whilst I saved some money.
I added the wheel spacers, and have done on a lot of cars previously, without any issues whatsoever. Points all noted herein, however.
I have spoken to a few people about this including mechanics, expedition leaders, and LR specialists who have all independently suggested that the most likely scenario is that the wheel simply split, apparently there is form for this!
Very disappointing if so, it is definitely an OEM wheel.
Looking to replace with a set of Evo Corse Dakar 18s with 265/65/18 tyres now.

Never seen a wheel split like that before
Occasionally they crack the inner rim (especially 22") but never crack right around the whole middle circumference of the wheel My D3 Build Thread

I must say I was surprised to hear it. And it looks like it was chopped by the disc but the disc is relatively unscathed.

Wheel is aluminium, disc is steel, there is no question what material is going to deform first and most. I think there is no evidence in the images suggesting the rim split first, and if that was the case why would the studs shear off? The wheel is still round and would just behave like a normal puncture until vehicle comes to a stop.Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue

If the wheel did split in motion, the tyre would deflate instantly and the weight would drop onto the remains of the wheel still attached to the spacer. This would put lots of force onto the studs, which gave way.
Just my theory, but If so what made the wheel split?

Whilst I agree it is unlikely, I think @Gareth's point stands. The force generated when(if) the wheel disintegrated, could have sheared the bolts. I was doing approx. 70 mph and took about 50 yards or so to come to a semi controlled stop.
Of course the hard steel on the disc slice the alloy wheel, band that remains the most likely scenario for me. Although, I would have expected the edges of the disc to be a bit more knackered?
The good news is that I have ordered a set of Evo Corse Dakar Wheels and 26/65/18 tyres which will mean I can rest assured the wheels (and removed spacers) will handle anything I throw at it. This was always the plan, but not so soon! And, fear not, I'll let the insurance company know.
Also, planning to fix the EPB and replace rear discs/pads/shoes while the motor is on light duties, sat on the space saving wheel

Have to say unlikely. If it snapped at the other end where the forces are concentrated then ?
However even if the wheel broke how would this cause the studs to shear / bend. Seen plenty of police stop videos of people driving on rims.

Of course, just waiting on the them to be sent from Italy, having lived in Italy for five years, I'm not expecting them to be 'rushed' here!
