D3 Main Dash Screen
Good Evening All,
Just a quick one to pluck your brains for any knowledge in there. I have a 2008 D3 TDV6 XS Commercial. A proper from factory Special vehicle. It has no screen in the center of the dash and I would quite like to fit one. Are they a plug and play type thing and are the wire for it there if not fitted in factory like a lot of vehicles?
I think it would be good to have Satnav etc. I've seen all these after market ones as well as the standard screen. But no point getting one if there is nothing behind the dash.
Thanks again!
Ted

They are driven off optical fibre from the 6CD headunit
Plus a load of (not fitted wires)
For nav you have a dvd drive under seat.
The nav is poor anyway
So no. Not a retrofit.

I’m sure there is a retrofit guide here somewhere but to keep it simple you need a MOST bus in your vehicle. So high line or premium stereo, satnav is under one of the front seats, amplifier under the other, speakers wired to the amp, …. Honestly it isn’t worth it if you want the display and the satnav in particular. Last unofficial map update is from 2018 (-ish).
The reason after market ones work is that they’re usually 2 DIN in size and mostly self contained (display, stereo, amp, …) and you replace the low line stereo - which is missing all bells and whistles - with it and usually use the same cabling to speakers.

a popular mod to earlier Freelander 2 that didnt have factory satnav (which was the same set up as the D3) was to install an aftermarket standalone satnav into the space in the dash.
you just need to find a satnav to the right dimensions that has the power feed from the back which you can piggy back to a switched feed in the fuse box. It then switches on and off with the ignition the same a factory fit
with mine i used the suction bracket that came with the unit secured to the inside of the empty 'box' on the dash.
Pics below of my FL2 set up in a 2008 GS model many moons ago.
If you have the 6 CD player fitted you could fit a D4 screen in there, I did a post on how to fit one in a D3, its a simple job with only a few wires and a fiber optic link wire. Just do a search on the board.
But one downside is the outdated Nav System, but all other info would be there, I still have my D4 screen in my MY2007 D3, but use my Waze app on my phone for navigation.

Evening All,
Thank you for your replies!
I spoke to a guy Simon in the D3 owners group on Facebook. He supplied me with this great upgrade! (As seen in attached photo.) No wires required other than a 12v feed. It can connect to your existing radio via aux cable or FM transmitter built in. It have everything on it. Carplay, apple/android connect etc. Can mirror your phones screen and you can keep all your steering wheel controls as it's all done via the main radio. Not to mention it has a reverse camera perfect for hitching up a trailer!
go on - tell me more - how much and where for please

Morning,
Well the guy was called Steve not Simon to start with knew it began with S 🤣. He sent me a link to his shop on Ebay.
The cost is £140 that's with the reverse camera and everything does come with full instructions he's put together and put in the box which is handy. I thought that was quite reasonable for what you get.
It does look good - can you connect the phone by wire to it aswell as wirelessly?
How is the touch screen?

You can do both if you like, it's Bluetooth and aux compatible. It also has room for a memory card and a memory stick/USB port.
You can obviously see I have the aux in the front of my radio, but that's only temporary as I needed an adaptor for the back of it. But if you still have the original radio installed Steve puts an extra long aux lead in as well so you can run the aux cable under all the panels and plug into the aux port in the back of the glove box. I didn't do that as I have an additional lead for my phone there as well. So you have lots of options!

I paid £80 off Amazon with rear camera
Touch screen works perfectly phone bluetooths to screen and runs Android Auto or Apple car play
I've fitted mine over the orignal screen and connected sound via the Aux in on exsisting head unit only down side is no 4x4 screen but I can live with that

Touch screen is brilliant as well not noticed any issues but had it less than 24hrs. Everyone on the D3 group on Facebook that have had it fitted a while sings it's praise though.

Yes, I'm sure there are cheaper ones out there and lots of options. I only went with this one as people were saying how good it was. Luckily from that point of view with the 4x4 screen I didn't have one there so I just went for this. Although this was made with that screen in mind and the screen comes with a magnet mount so you can just take the screen out in seconds to see the 4x4 screen behind it and unplug it if needed.

Interested in doing this myself. No overheating issues with the new screen? When I mounted my phone in front of the existing D3 touchscreen, the combined heat from the existing touchscreen (doing nothing) & phone mounted on top of it caused the phone (running Waze) to overheat and shut down.

None of these issues that I have noticed but I've only had it in the car for a day. Although in this heat I've used it to and from work today best part of 3 hours driving and no overheating issues.
