Van to Europe

My sister bought my business use van off me when I closed my business down.

I'm now loaning it back to use for transportation of all my son's personal property over to his new home in Germany.

Got the usual things like warning triangle, hi-viz, UK, sticker, etc. in place. Will have the V5C and letter of 'authorisation' from my sis as well.

Insurance I need to look into a little as I have 3rd party cover from my own private and company car insurance but want this to be comprehensive as a necessity and fact it's no longer my van. Unsure whether sis can add me to hers and up cover to fully comp, I can maybe do similar with my own insurance or whether a standalone short term temp policy may be best (have used these loads of times when buying new cars, not checked if cover abroad).

I have RAC/AA cover of my own and will extend this to European cover for the trip.

The load will mostly consist of his extensive, and expensive, tools and cabinets (ranging from odd shaped bits of wire and dollies from sheet metal days all the way through general tools up to about a dozen pieces of Ryobi kit and all the add ons). Question is would this attract any attention at customs if I was stopped for a search? Was thinking a letter from my son may be a useful back up?

Any words of advice/caution?

Security of the van will be covered by fact that in my sister's ownership it has been covered in flower stickers along flanks and rear doors Laughing

I would advise you to have documentary evidence to support the reason why you have a van full of expensive tools etc.

For example, identity for your son and proof of his address in Germany along with proof of why he’s now in Germany.

Reason being, if you were stopped at customs or by the Police, both here or abroad, a “flower power” van full of tools is going to come across as a tad suspicious.

Thumbs Up
