Using ramps, stopped halfway, now won't start. |

Hi Folks,
Will be grateful for your ideas.
2014 D4 HSE SDV6.
I began the day today intending to replace the fuel tank cradle which is very corroded. I am using four 3 tonne ramps to give me plenty of room to work.
Last week I tried a test of the ramps and drove up in low range. When at the top an epb fault popped up, I had to pull the emergency release cable to shift into neutral and release the brake. I left as is and will get to that job next but it may have relevance to the problem today.
Today I crawled up the ramps in low range but, I'm blaming wifey here who is my spotter, communication could have been better and I had to roll backwards down the ramps a little not wanting to risk touching the gas pedal in case I had too much and shot off the end of the ramps.
Still on the ramps, half way down and desending backwards, in drive and low range, the car decided it didnt like what was happening and cut out.
It stayed where it was halfway down the ramp, I assume the transmission was still in drive but engine off at this point.
It would not restart upon several attempts and is sending a gearbox fault message.
I pulled the emergency release again and this successfully shifted into neutral which allowed me to roll back off the ramps.
Problem now is, it won't start at all. I have tried a reset by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes.
It is in park ( or maybe neutral ) on the gear selector knob. The gearbox fault message is displaying along with the epb fault message from the previous week. I am fairly confident that the battery is good but there is no attempt to start when i push the button.
Some observations, should there be any 'rollback' down a slope when forward drive is engaged?
Is this possibly related to a neutral safety mechanism?
Would appreciate any opinions.

Have a read through this thread, some similarities, ramps, epb, non start, low fuel? Problem was corrosion of the fuses, solved by either replacing them or removing & putting them back in, worth a try if you don't have gap iid to check for any codes.

No success so far. I have tried a jump cable from neutral to earth.
Tried a jump from a different vehicle.
The foot brake does feel unusually firm but when trying to start with the pedal depressed I can hear fuel pump running and relays clicking away. I can detect no evidence of an attempt to turn the engine over by the starter motor at all.
When the foot brake is not depressed it pops up with the warning to press the footbrake so I am not suspecting the brake switch yet.
The gear selector knob is saying it is in park and P is showing on the info console.
I have just 20km range indicated and nearly empty / this is because I was changing the fuel tank craddle and needed it to be as light as possible. Would fuel starvation cause it to not attempt to turn over? Either way, the indicated range is at a value I would expect it to be at based on recent use.
My current list is a) starter motor gone ( or related fuses/relays ) or, b) Crankshaft / engine seizure or something equally horrific...
I haven't tried to crank the engine as there was no indication of a critical failure at the time. No shudders or knocking or anything like that. It just cut out. I am assuming there would be detectable symptoms to something catastrophic but I am willing to be educated.
This is all very much above may skill level so a mechanic is coming to look tomorrow.
I will report back to the forum in the interest of sharing knowledge... if I manage to get some that is. I am having recurring nightmares about the cost of an engine replacement, if anyone has some good news i would love to hear it...

You are making my mistake going up ramps when low on fuel, the D3/4 fuel tank is long and slim consequently the fuel at one end of the tank is empty, D3/4 have a safety feature to protect components that can be damaged if not running in fuel like the hp fuel pump, so the engine is stopped and the EP is engaged by the EMS before it runs out of fuel and will not start or allow the starter motor to operate until sufficient fuel (20ltr) has been put in the tank. It can when others can't,

Hi Folks,
Sadly this has turned out to be a failed engine. I don't know the specific failure yet. I have had two separate mechanics look at it. We found a significant oil leak from the crankshaft oil seal and the oil level had dropped quickly although not empty.
The crank was rotating somewhat although the torque required was much too high and the main fuse was blowing repeatedly.
The mechanic removed the starter motor and checked it and found it to be functioning.
Obviously I am no expert or mechanic but from the research I have done since, my instinct is that crankshaft journals may be worn/failed and possibly crank bearings failed or spinning. It looks as though the block is intact and the damage is limited. There are no piston rods sticking out the side anyway. Maybe the initial cause was failed oil pump but we will see I guess.
The vehicle is with a specialist engine rebuilders and a full engine out and rebuild is on the cards. I've only owned it since last October so I am dissappointed with how its turned out but the money I will loose selling it as it is, versus, repairing is roughly the same so I am going with the repair.
The question now is what to do while the body is off.
Obvious one is antiroll bar bushings which are a pain to get at. I had to cut a socket in half the last time I tried that job.
There is a bit of corrosion on the chassis too so it makes sense to ask them if they will clean it up and apply a rust converter and finish coat.
Any other suggestion for this 'while your in their moment?'
