Grinding noise from rotary gear selector

I currently have the dreaded intermittent rotary selector not rising issue on my car, but in addition to this when I unlocked the car the other morning, there was a grinding noise coming from the selector as I opened the door. It's worth noting that this was the rear door - I hadn't even got in the front yet, let alone attempt to start the car.

This seems odd to me, as I'm aware that depressing the brake pedal opens the brake switch, which then activates the solenoid to allow the selector to rise. Why on earth would it be making this noise before any of this?

In terms of faults I've got quite a few from when it first failed to rise. 2 or 3 are about LIN bus failure, 1 is regarding wake up control signal failure , and then one for mechanical failure - actuator is stuck.

I resolved this problem by disconnecting the battery for a day. Since then the grinding noise has stopped and the rotary gear selector raises up every time. I suspect that the brake switch might be the cause of the issue here - why powering everything off for a day fixed it I honestly don't know. Worth a try if you have the same issue.

One very odd thing that I've never experienced before, is as soon as I touched the terminal on to the battery lots of electronics came to life immediately. Normally, after reconnecting I've found the most you get is a click from the rear valve block and that's it. Electrics that are simply far too complicated!
