| Bolt Buster - Glow plugs? |

According to the Haynes manual, the glow plugs replacements are “beginner with experience”. Judging by the langauge on here, it feels like it won’t be. If, in the case that they are seized in place… is there a reason not to use an inductive heating unit on them? Presumably there’s some aluminium somewhere that might melt?

I wouldn’t even think about changing them
If you want to start your car AT 0°C OR LOWER , buy a remote FBH switch on (assuming yours work) off eBay.
This has the bonus of a warm heater from the start and a less stressed engine.
If you snap the GPs your looking at £700 for someone to come extract them
Its usually carbon build up on the full length of the GP that is the issue that causes snapping

That's the worry!  I might have a look. I think I can see if it works when the engine ignition is turned on right? to see if there's exhaust gases coming from the engine bay?

If you start your engine at 4°C or less the FBH should fire up. As you say, get out and look for the exhaust gasses. or open the bonnet and bits of it should be hot, and more obvious after engine switch off. Try and let engine run for 5-10 mins.
If it's not that cold, I believe unplugging the temp sensor behind the bumper, then switch the ignition on and off a few times until the outside temp reads -- or -60C or something 4 or less, and then start the engine.
Yes to have a professional do it, will be about £700 (to take on the risk)
I think on Eu4 engines the GP's are more likely to come out ok. But think twice before touching the rear one.
Get one of these before demand drives the price up. (that does happen!) (£78 + p&p)

Further to Pete K's suggestion I can recommend this remote kit:

A touch cheaper (for now) and home-grown in the UK. Had one on my car for a couple of years and it works well, and also has a USB interface allowing you to hook up the Webasto diagnostic software and clear faults/look at interesting graphs.
My car actually struggled a bit getting going this morning for the first time this year, now all I have to do is work out where I left the remote at the end of last winter  D3 2005 HSE

I’ll give that a go tomorrow morning! I’ll do it cold and see what it spits out. I’m in two minds as to whether or not it’ll be the GPs as once it’s trying to turn over for 10s or so you can hear the battery struggling to keep up. Might just be a janky battery.

GP's are used by the engine to aid starting many more times then many think and not just when the GP light on the dash stays on.
using a remote for the FBH (mine started up this morning as below 4) is great for warming it up but I dont think its a long term option for failed GP's 
I had a set on my 2008 replaced (its for sale on here  ) earlier this year by CDS as well as the relays and I would certainly recommend him  (less than £700  )
I found mine needed changing with a clamp type multimeter, straightforward to work out how many were working.
I contacted robinsonlabs some time back about a group buy but never even had a reply back 
Battery check would be first check mind they give lots of odd problems if not good.

I checked the battery. All fine. I went to the garage today and they said “we refuse to do glow plugs on the D3… because they’re inevitably galvanically welded in”. They suggested the FBH as well.
The only problem I have with the FBH “fix” is that you can’t just hop in and start the car whenever you want. But given that the FBH mod is so cheap (compared to the GPs) I’ll get that installed.
Do you have details for the chaps that did your GPs? I might get it done next year when it’s nice and warm out.

I can highly recommend Clive at CDS for doing the glow plugs.
On another note I may have a remote for sale, same as the one Pete linked for the guy in Romania. I've just swapped to a D4 and got a used Altox to use for traking etc. If you're interested let ne know.
