I’ve not even mentioned any mods. Not that they are huge but an extra light on the front.
I don’t get why others can get a cheap policy and some of us can’t even get a quote.1998 Defender 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF

Swapping vehicles mid year from FL2 to D3, Direct Line were a straight "No" for me if there were any modifications whatsoever. They quoted £650 for no modifications but even the raised air intake was a No. RAC accepted raised air intake and wheel spacers for about £550, so a win there!Previously:

Modifications are a contentious issue when I discuss it with pals. Some declare, some don't. Personally I've always declared then as I cannot face the idea of a forensic mechanic ripping the car apart in the event of a fatal accident. The idea of an insurance company not paying out because I didn't declare a roof rack, or the wheel spacers, is wholly scary.2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Its an odd one. If its fitted to the car by the manufacturer some insurance companies are not interested. So the BMW has a sky lounge, comfort pack, parking assist, comfort seats and tinted rear windows. Would the fact that it has the optional sunroof or heated and cooled cup holders be responsible for a crash and therefore allow the insurance to null and void the policy?
I have a Thule roof rack for the Volvo. When I put it on....do I have to ring the insurance to make the change...and then again when I take it off?
Personally wouldn't touch wheel spacers.

I’m with Admiral and insure my D4 and a DS3 and pay £750 a year full comp.
Why wait, just go for it and enjoy life.

Someone suggested LV for insuring my VW California and they wanted to know every extra.
I went through it in fine detail over the next 20min. Increased the price so that it was more expensive than my current renewal so its was a no.

Factory options or manufacturer OEM parts seem not to be an issue on insurance, but certainly things like roof racks, wheels, engine mods, all either add to the appeal of it being stolen or in the case of engine mods, makes it a more powerful machine than when first sold.
The questionnaire on CompareTheMarket even has options for different model badges being put on.
Ultimately I just want to be able to do whatever I like to the car (I'm putting in a camper bed setup eg) without worrying that I will be uninsured should the worst happen.2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Knowing insurance companies these days they will refuse to pay out as it wasn't designed to be slept in so your not using it as the manufacturer intended.2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

I fitted Brembo 6 pots with the JLR logos, and larger LR wheels to both my RRS and D4.
I could have bought the vehicles with these already fitted, and so when the question was asked, I said 'not to my knowledge'.
Being genuine LR parts, the question of them not being up to it re quality or purpose would not stand up in court, so cannot see an issue.
They could always say brake pads that were not OE invalidated the policy, but at the end of the day, common sense would prevail, just how long it takes is another matter.
3 years and 5 months it took General Accident to accept a 'fire' claim on a car I had with an agreed value back in the 80's, but common sense did win in the end.
Insurance companies thrive on charging extra and refusing to pay out, however, at the end of the day the contract is fairly simple and the consumer is protected far more than you would think.
