A-Plan - I'm not impressed !
Well after a first time ....... this is the last time I'll be using them.
Not been impressed at all by their 'services'.
As I've got a fair bit of extra kit on the D4, I went to them earlier in the year ..... believing they were specialists in specific fields....especially LR's as they advertise on here.
However as nice as she was, the 'specialist' didn't have much knowledge in the kit I was declaring as extras e.g. RAI, sump plate, sliders, twin electrics, solar panel, etc etc.
It left me concerned if everything I declared and fully explained, would actually be covered?
All very well being specialists, but if there's a specialist in hot-hatches, then chances are they're not going to be a specialist on 4X4s.
They need specialists in each category to cover just that category only and deal with customers within it.
But today was the day I've decided never to use them again.
I've just moved house and in the process of advising everyone of my change of address, A-Plan advise they need to charge me £59 extra because my vehicle is now located in a different area.
All well and good, however in changing my summer open-top runabout and the wife's car, none of these insurance companies wanted more money for the address change!
Not happy about that at all.
Sorry A-Plan, but I'm outa here once my policy has expired....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Try NFU. I am with them with a long list of modifications that they've covered.
If they decline to quote for motor insurance find another local branch and initially get a quote for house insurance, chances are they'll be keen for your business and quote on motor if you ask.
Seems to be getting harder to insure and afford that for (J)LR vehicles..Jim

My other two - Churchill and General Accident don’t make an admin charge, nor have they penalised me by charging extra just because I’ve moved location.
I’m also sure that if I moved from my new address to my old address, I’d still be penalised....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

A-Plan have consistently been well over every other insurer's premiums since I've had the Disco. Often by as much as 200% higher.
Adrian Flux have always been quite competitive and they cater for specialist vehicles so you can have agreed values, extra kit bolted on etc.Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green

I'm with NFU for my RRS and I do like the fact that you get to talk to a real person.
They are also very keen to insure our building/contents/public liability. However, they cannot quote for that because we work with Social Services to provide homes/support for young people within the care system. Direct Line do at a reasonable cost but their quote for the RRS for very high.

The problem with insurance is that is so personal with so many variables. Personally I've found A-plan very competitive and super easy to deal with.
I could flip it the other way with Adrian Flux and say I've never had a good experience.
Its all subjective at the end of the day. You buy what suits your needs. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

+1 for NFU, any insurance is only as good as the service you get with a claim, its OK looking and taking the cheapest if they won't/don't pay out.
NFU are excellent, I have everything insured with them and I have made claims in the past with maximum satisfaction. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Another ex-customer of A-Plan here.
Insured with them last year - £299 fully-comp, including legal expenses cover. Their renewal quote for the same policy this year - £697!!
Once I'd stopped laughing I ran my details through the Money Saving Expert comparison site, and got loads of quotes which beat A-Plan (or Howdens, as they're apparently now called) by a long way. Ended up going with Hastings Direct on one of their standard policies - slightly lower excess than my old policy, increased annual mileage, and a premium of £286.
A-Plan, or Howdens, or whoever they are now, clearly aren't interested in insuring us Disco drivers any more. Maybe it's time to end their sponsorship arrangement with this site? I certainly don't think disco3.co.uk should be promoting a company who clearly aren't interested in getting our business.

Time to remove their subforum from the Site Sponsors section then? I'm not sure the forum should be promoting the services of a company which is clearly no longer interested in getting our business.

We still insure many members on here and are here to offer our support. I have posted across the forums Def2, Disco, etc... that we have removed our banner and advertising (still support the forums) as our specialist insurer panel has undergone some changes in eligible criteria. We have not pulled out of the 4x4 market. We remain competitive on many makes and models but unfortunately due to thefts across the industry on JLR vehicles some insurers have updated criteria for any JLR aged 2014 and newer - which limits our options for these vehicles. As this means we cannot support every member we made the decision to remove our advert until this changes.
Please note we became part of Howden over 2 years ago and only recently undertook the name change, the name change of us a broker has absolutely zero impact on insurer premiums and policies. The insurance industry as a whole is seeing premium increases this is mainly due to the overall costs of claims increasing dramatically over recent years.
We still remain competitive for many members but as above, we no longer advertise at this current moment in time. Members continue to have access to our club only schemes and discounts where applicable, they also have access to myself, a qualified advisor, whether you insure through us or not.

It’s the insurers not APlan / Howdens pulling out. We have two vehicles with APlan because the service and price was the best.
My Defender went from £1300 to £2600 with Admiral and nothing had changed in my circumstances. l You’ll find my renewal letter on another topic. The renewal quotes on comparison sites ranged from £6k to £7k. Even NFU was £4k. I stayed with Admiral.
Insurance is a black art and many things affect it. Glad you got a good price but next year might aloether different, who knows? 🤷♂️New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
