Catalytic converter - where to buy?
Hello fellow Disco-3-sufferers,
Since corrosion has befallen my exhaust system, ie esp the pipe between turbo charger and cat, a new cat is needed to pass our equivalent of the MOT.
The part number is WCD502160, but at approx 2.000 EUR it seems to be quite expensive without any aftermarket parts available.
Does anyone have a better idea or can point me in a better (cheaper) direction?
Thanks!

If the problem is a corroded pipe rather than the catalytic converter itself, any exhaust specialist should be able to weld in a new piece of pipe to replace the corroded section for a lot less than €2000?Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue

I’ve got a D3 used cat sat on my garage shelf with inlet and outlet pipe in very good condition, removed when the D3 was about 4 years old to de-cat It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I will investigate this possibility a bit further. My garage thinks the catalytic converter should be replaced anyway.

Thank you! As per my last PM, my latest research shows there are several versions of catalytic converters for the Disco 3, mainly depending on the emission standard and whether or not a DPF is present.
In case someone else needs this information:
For MY08 Euro 4 vehicles with a DPF, as my vehicle unfortunately is, only the WCD502160 seems to be right.
This is the only version I know of without any aftermarket parts available and thus costing approx EUR 2.000 (excl VAT, that is).
I will keep you updated!

Thanks for pointing me in this direction, this is a very good lead indeed. I did my research, but this did not come up before!
The funny part:
I contacted the vendor to verify they offer the right product. They said no, it won't fit and there is no fitting product.
After checking the Klarius online catalogue myself, I can confirm that - according to the catalogue - Klarius' part no 3225925 is equivalent to LR WCD502160.
I have now contacted Klarius and will report back.

I have heard back from Klarius (they were very helpful!), they even double-checked with their own technical team. Klarius' cat with part no 3225925 is indeed equivalent to LR WCD502160.
They have, unfortunately, discontinued the product and can no longer supply it.
Now I am curious if there really is no alternative to the original part.
Effort wise, however, it is (very) slowly getting to the point where it would be smart to just let my garage do their job and order the original part. But I am not quite there yet

If the existing pipe work is sound why not cut the old cat off and weld a second hand cat in?- it doesn’t have to be the exact same model! It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Ah dam it, did look very promising
Did find another company showing DPF’s just wondered on the off chance if this company is any help
have also been trying to cross reference some of the numbers from the first eBay Land Rover link to see if anything came up seeing there were BMW numbers

As an example number 18308509232 is shown in the first land river eBay link , put that number into another web site and comes up with this
Apologises if you’ve already done it , but maybe there very similar , fingers crossed for u
Did also see the note listed on their web site so maybe they could make up one
If we do not have any shelf stock of this part it will be made to order which will take approximately 10-15 working days. Please contact us to confirm availability.

I have inquired into this a little further - unfortunately, this cat does not fit my car. Why they advertise it the way they do is beyond me.
The difference between the part needed (WCD502160) and the part from LR for other D3s (excl DPF + EURO IV, ie WCD502490) seems to be two-fold:
(1) shorter pipe on the WCD502160, since there is a DPF,
(2) no thread for an exhaust gas temperature sensor.
I am now wondering if it would be feasible and wise to simply get the other part (WCD502490) and let my workshop machine it to size. It is at least EUR 2.000 cheaper.
I have also contacted a german supplier listing the original part at approx EUR 1.200, which is half the price of the original, but I have not heard back.
If both options fail, I will decide whether to bite the bullet and pay up or finally sell the car (I already have a vendor, who is interested).

Just to clarify as you started the thread mentioning that it was a rusty pipe issue.
Did it fail TUV on actual exhaust measurements or because the the flexible pipe was leaking? Unless the catalytic converter is actually broken, there is no need to change it. I understand it's the easy route for the garage, just order a new part and fit it, but that seems not very cost efficient in such case?
As the catalytic converter is intended to save the environment, it sort of contradicts that purpose to use more rare earth materials to replace it, if it's not broken so it does not function.Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue
