Second battery - questions!

Just learned about the space for a second battery. Did any of them come with this as a purchase option? If so what kind of circuits was it hooked up to? Was it just used for the fridge?

If I wanted to fit one to mine what are the uses for it, do people just add their own kit directly to them or is there any clever way of hooking it up to run the stereo etc when parked?

This brings me onto my next question - if I was sat in the car for a while with the ignition turned off/key removed - will it still flatten the normal battery? Will it still go to sleep if it's not locked?

Thanks
Ben

As long as the 2nd battery is connected to the crank battery via a relay or equiv then when ign = off then you’ll only run down the 2nd batt. If it’s connected directly things will work it you risk draining both and getting the dreaded click when you go to start the engine.

Nothing ever came with a 2nd bat from new, all fitted after and lots of ways to do it. Fitted 2nd batts to D3 and D4, deffo worthwhile for the off-roading and camping jollies I used to do. And a 2nd battery does so much more than keeping the beers cold. Thumbs Up

With regards an auxiliary battery I fitted one about 15 years back

I've fitted a marine grade fuse board and use the battery to power:

Rear mounted light
Fridge in boot
Air compressor in boot
Auxiliary power socket in boot
Marine grade auxiliary power socket under bonnet for work lights etc

And on occasion used it to jump start myself when the main battery was fading
