HELP ! Bl***dy Boiling water taps or dispensers

In the last 12 years I have had 3 boiling water taps fail!

Both I & SWMBO really like features like, energy saving, instant boiling water etc.. but they seem very unreliable.

I have had taps from Franke, Grohe, whose customer service was appalling, and InSinkErator, the most recent failure.

In every case the tap outlasted its warrantee, in the case of Grohe by only a short period.

IIRC I have paid between £450 and £800 for a tap, and I am loth to expend a similar amount for a tap which will only last between 3 & 6 years.

My plumber suggests spending £900 on a new Grohe which only has a 2 year warranty. I am NOT going to do this!

Intu have also been suggested, as they offer a 7 year warranty - but reviews are very poor.

Third party warranty companies won't cover these taps.

Advice please - do I simply buy a kettle - I hope not, or a boiling water dispensers {maybe a better bet}

Do you have a water softener? Hampshire water is quite hard I believe. Is it the hard water killing the taps?

We've just had this discussion and have gone with normal tap and will get a multi-temperature kettle once kitchen is fully installed.

Don't need boiling water for making coffee !

I don't understand the "energy saving" bit. Surely the same amount of energy is required to heat the water to boiling point whatever the means?

Thanks everyone for comments so far - please keep them coming.

Thanks Navigator:-

Boiling water taps use much less electricity than kettles, making them very energy efficient and budget-friendly! While each model is slightly different, in general they use 3p per day or 6% of your energy bill per year, while a kettle uses a massive 2.5p per boil (according to Npower). That means that boiling an electric kettle just once uses more electricity than a boiling water tap will in one day! Of course, this depends on your energy tariff, but since the average UK household boils their kettle 4 times per day, you can definitely expect to save in the long term.

I have a time switch on my boiling water tap, so that it is turned off last thing at night & back on first thing in the morning to further conserve energy.

I’ll be the annoying guy pointing out that a Braun (or whatever) kettle will retail for 30 or 40. And even if it uses more electricity (according to the article you referred), if you calculate the total cost of ownership (TCO) of kettle + energy vs tap + energy over the expected lifetime (as you have data)…. The kettle will most likely turn out to be more economical.

I would spend the extra and get a Quooker tap. I have fitted loads of these over the years and rarely give problems.

I’ve heard so many negative stories about these taps from clients and friends who have them.

I have a separate tap for filtered water (under sink cartridge filter) and a temperature controlled kettle. I use an Aeropress for coffee using water at 80c. I’ve no desire to change that set up.

Thumbs Up

In the winter (8 months of the year here) I just leave an old style kettle on the low heat side of the Aga, move it over to the boiling side when needed- zero electric Cool

Fitted a few of these. Hate them

One of the commercial buildings we used to maintain, they had six of them. Never would they all be working at once.
They scale up, clog up and Censored up.
I know that this is a hard water area. They are not a cheap product, they need to be better!

Kettle is fine for me 👍🏽

Seems to be a bit of confusion here between marketing and physics.

My solution to saving is to not boil a full kettle all the time - the 2.5 p per boil. I use a plastic jug kettle and when hot or boiling water is needed I measure in just enough water for what is required.

We bought a breville one cup for swmbo's salon. It just boils "one cup" at a time at the push of a button. It's been excellent. No heating water you don't need. Cost about £50. Gets descaled frequently. Quids in compared to a hot water tap.
Today is the oldest you've been and the youngest you'll ever be again.
