Coolant disappearing - EGR cooler leak?
Hello there. Anyone can give me a little advice please? I hear that coolant can leak thru EGR cooler. But I am not sure if this would be also visible on the outside. I snapped quickly a photo of where EGR is connected to its cooler.
My main issue is that I started noticing loss of coolant since around Winter. And lately I noticed that the engine oil level increased slightly. In fact sometime it shows normal level, sometime increased so that suggests the water might be getting in. Obviously my worst scenario is the head gasket but since I have started noticing the issues, I haven’t had any other symptoms of head gasket issue i.e. milky oil, white gases from exhaust..
Any advice, direction is much appreciated.

It might be the oil cooler that is water cooled - it’s under the oil filter in the v of the engineSeries one 1949 - in bits, chassis is strapped to the ceiling in my garage (beside the canoe)

Yes, I’d say that it’s most likely the egr cooler.

Thanks Ronp.
I’ll read your issue. Btw I did test the cooling system for presence of exhaust gasses. And that came negative so I am hoping and excluding the head gasket for now.

And you basically tested it with blanking off EGRs??

Hi folks. Is the discussion via PM perhaps relevant to help others in here to solve the same issue?
Anyways…

Is your coolant leak constant (i.e. emptying the coolant tank?) or does it “stop” right below the “Min.” level?
Have you thought about the coolant “manifold” (or whatever is called the plastic part on top of the engine - right in the V)? Couple of years ago a had a similar mysterious coolant leak I could not see where it came from. Easy and cheap job to tackle.
Just an idea for you to check/rule-out.

I did actually changed the thermostat not long ago as I thought that was initially the issue. It turned out all dry while changing it.
I still don’t understand how the water would leak into the EGR valve as the EGR cooler and the water inside is seperated.

Quick update. The issue was the EGR cooler. It got burst from within inside and the water was getting sucked into the air intake and the engine eventually.
Just before I was getting it checked by my mechanic, got stuck on the motorway with completely emptied water through the expansion bottle.
Later realised this was caused by leaky EGR cooler.
The Saga continues Now after the EGR cooler was replaced. The coolant seems to be still disappearing. Now I suspect the head gasket…

If it’s the head gasket the engine would be overheating!
Fill the radiator and expansion bottle full of coolant leave the expansion cap off, start the engine and let it run at tick over, look for bubbles coming out of the coolant bottle, if you can see bubbles coming out of the coolant a cylinder head gasket is faulty, if not the head gaskets are ok.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hi - reading with interest - particularly the comment "Is your coolant leak constant (i.e. emptying the coolant tank?) or does it “stop” right below the “Min.” level?

Does anyone have any information on this as struggling to search without the correct terms. My water leak is stopping just below the min level and there is coolant on top of the engine just below the oil filter area - the coolant is then running off and dripping down the engine and off the rear of the underside protection plate.Porsche 968 Cabrio

If you search for "tdv6 thermostat" on ebay you will get loads of results and part numbers.
It's not a thermostat though! More a bridge between heads
Thermostat is white

Consider if the little fuel cooler on the top of the oil filter housing is leaking - mine was leaking at the O rings between the little cooler and the body of the oil filter housing. You could see cprrosionm from the coolant on the aluminium.Series one 1949 - in bits, chassis is strapped to the ceiling in my garage (beside the canoe)
