Died on motorway - what options are available?

Hi all,

Over the weekend, crusing along the M25 a metallic knocking started in the D4 (2016, 57k miles). We initially thought it was the helicopter flying overhead, but alas not! The knocking sped up and slowed down with the engine speed, and we started loosing power and revs. Within 30 secs the car died and we were on the hard shoulder. No smoke, no oil everywhere - all very calm!

Anway, it's with the garage now who are v. busy but will assess it when they can. I've heard of snapping cranks and so on; I'm guessing this is what I have... If I do - what are the options nowadays? I recently (3 months ago) had the cambelt and so on done; would this possilbly have contributed to some failure?

I realise you can only speculate, but I'm just trying to gather options.

Thanks

If it is the crank, then your options are limited to a rebuild, but thats dependent on the damage or a new engine or short engine and swap the top over. All of the above aren't cheap.

However, be wary of the ebay / Facebook cheap engine refurbs out there. There are lot of cowboys.

NWS might be an option. Also look in the Land Rover mags.

Thanks.

This morning's Googling has uncovered "Diesel Heads" over in Essex advertising SDV6 engine rebuilds.

Assuming it is the crank - it's just hard to know who to trust, and whether to throw money at it or to sell it as it is.

You have my sympathy (not that is worth a lot) - I had crank go on mine and Oval Autos did a complete rebuild (Block, Pistons, Crank, couple of Injectors, and Second stage Turbo) - in my case Crank bent and snapped the end caps. Have to say they did a great job on mine and I couldnt fault them for either the repair or follow up - only issue is they are in Cradley Heath in West Midlands so may be a bit awkward for you. ( email is: info@ovalautos.com )
Back in 2020 that little lot with labour came to just ove £7k so its not going to be a cheap fix.
Good luck in getting it sorted

I think I would have to go with a genuine Land Rover reconditioned engine if I was a customer paying parts and labour.

Find out what your local dealer requires for a warranty claim on a engine and make sure it’s fitted following this so that you have piece of mind that if it goes wrong in the next 2 years it will get fixed by JLR part’s warranty.

Thanks all.

I just spoke to Oval Autos; and they do seem to offer an honest service and have done many of these.
They'll offer a JLR reconditioned engine or rebuild existing engine adding parts as needed. Once I pay for the strip down and assesment then I can decide what to do from there.

I was thinking of selling the car anyway, I guess I now need to decide if I sell "as-it-is" or pay to get it fixed and see if I recoup any of the cash and if it'd sell easier.

It's a shame as it's an HSE Lux with all the gear and is a fab car. Will have to make a decision over the next day or so as it's sitting on my local garage forecourt.

If it’s got full JLR service history then it might bec worth a shot at getting a “goodwill contribution” from LR… nothing ventured..

It did have full LR history, but then I elected to take it independent a couple of years ago.

I'm pretty sure they'll tell me where to go if I ask; but as you say sometimes nothing ventured...

I think the key decision is whether to keep it. I was getting rid of it, as I'd just been quoted £2k to insure the thing! That's when I was just mindful to get rid, even though I love the car.

Some on here have reported success with a part indy service history.
Good luck getting sorted. Your car is an Adblue model , one of the last . That makes it quite desirable to some ( ULEZ compliant etc).

One further thought. Where did you have the cam belt done? You may find it’s conncted.

Cambelt was done by the garage I dumped it at. I didn't want to raise that with them as I'm sure it'll put them on the defensive. Could it have contributed to the failure in any way?

I think it is a desireable model as an HSE Lux - RSE, Fridge, Extended leather, Xenons, Cameras, Heated wheel etc with Altox heater and had the full Bodsy oil flush a couple of years ago.
