Just did mine today. Didn't even need to jack the car up or remove the wheel - just full right lock and off-road height (plus some axle stands for peace of mind).
Although I've never had a problem engaging reverse my gearlever suddenly went sloppy between the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th planes last week, and sure enough the circlip turned out to be the cause. New one fitted and the gearchange is better than it's ever been. My car has had a slightly baulky shift ever since I bought it more than two years ago. I put it down to age and wear but this has transformed it, so who knows how long ago the circlip broke.
Thanks again Adam.

Ben
You are welcome,
Glad it cured your problem. It fixed mine in the same way.
No reverse gear Tuesday! Big panic! Wife away Wednesday so no 2nd car.
Remembered this thread.... Managed to find a circlip thanks to Lee Perry in High Wickham (love the chickens!) and eventually found a 14mm hex socket (why doesn't anybody stock anything any more?)
Long story short.. After much effing & jeffing got the undone and found the culprit.
Now I've been a bit negative over the last 3 months of D3 ownership but I have to say that that was very satisfying especially after being told by Guy Salmon's in Northampton that there were no servicable parts on a Discovery gearbox but they could get me a new one if I leave it with them for a few weeks.
As I said, big heart felt thanks brightyuk! Site donation merited i think.

Hi I'm new to this site, I'm about to take on this job, has anyone got more pictures of where the hex key is located?
Is it behind the plastic trim in the wheel arch?
Thanks
