Rasta wheel carrier

Searching for a gas strut for a rasta wheel carrier, anyone have a part number or know of a replacement that would fit.

I've got a Rasta carrier.

I've never found a direct replacement for the original strut but took measurements and weights and drew up the following specification as a rough guide:

Gas Strut Dimensions:

Ball Joint - 10 mm

Rod - 8 mm

Cylinder - 18 mm (but smaller would be better)

Stroke - 182 mm

Cylinder Length - 250 mm

C2C - 480 mm (but 470 mm or 475 mm better)

Carrier Weights:

Wheel Weight - 11.5 kg

Tyre Weight - 24.5 kg (17" BFG AT)

Carrier Weight - 19 kg

Combined Carrier, Wheel & Tyre - 55 kg

This should hopefully give you a start point. I strongly suggest you use metal ball joints NOT plastic.

If you've not got a strut on it now, then as a stop gap you can use a tailgate strut - not perfect but it has worked for me.

I got this one for mine which I'm pretty sure is a Rasta, it looks the same as a Rasta but I got it used.

I got 100Nm, but to be fair less would be possibly better.

Given the design of the lever it's very unlikely it would open accidentally - they're pretty stiff to operate. They latch over and close with a "clunk" - so much so that I use a small rubber tap washer under the nose of the lever to prevent metal on metal.

I've used mine off road with no incidents.

I suppose you could wrap a small cable lock around it of you're concerned.

No there's no way to lock them which is a shame, but as mentioned they're pretty solid when closed and I can't imagine it coming open, mine hasn't in the last 6-8 months since I fitted it.
