Intermittent auto Transmission fault

Recently purchased a 2011 disco 4 Hse with 116k did about 200 miles without any issues, this weekend a couple of times when parking had a transmission fault when moving from Drive to reverse still let you change gear but clunked/jumped going between them but still worked but then locked in P when selected, engine on off sorted it every time and continued to work fine whilst driving around.

Did have a slight reverse polarity issue when rushing (I know that’s what happens when rushing home for a takeaway) and jumping the car after a flat battery when adding the idcore CarPlay module but a few fuses and mega fuse replaced seemed to have sorted all of that and battery voltages all seem okay 14.4v when running. This did require dash out and gear selector so I suppose could be a snagging cable but is intermittent and not all gear changes from drive to reverse cause the faults.

Fault codes below which all clear when engine restarted after faults showing and re appear when transmission fault shows.

TCM (Transmission control module)
P0915-01
Gearshift position - circuit range/performance

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
U0402-68
Invalid data received from transmission control module

PBM (Parking brake control module)
U0402-00
Invalid data received from transmission control module

TCCM (Transfer case control module)
U0402-00
Invalid data received from transmission control module

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

There are threads on this, some quite recently, a search will reveal.

In my case, almost exactly the same issues as yours, it required a new (in my case, secondhand) megatronic unit.

Find a ZF gearbox specialist who has the ZF diagnostics equipment, they can confirm if it's the gearbox position sensor or not. This part is not repairable, it's a replacement unit as I've suggested.

Thanks Dave,

Did have a look and did see that yourself and some others had a similar issue recently, just as my previous disco 3 had a few issues solved by sometimes a random other fault code so thought it was worth posting with all fault codes.

Out of interest how much was the work and replacement part ? I’m assuming needs reprogramming with iid? Was yours the position sensor that was faulty and did you try anything else prior to getting diagnostic

Cheers

Tom

The Mechatronic unit isn't difficult to change, it's pretty much the same as doing a transmission oil & filter change plus a few extras bolts. Before you do that, you really need to get the actual values checked, it could be a selector fault or a Mechatronic fault. The 'invalid data' DTC's can be ignored as they're all consequential DTC's.
It's one of those 'chicken or egg' DTC's - the shift controller may be requesting a position that is implausible or the transmission may be trying to reach a valid position but cannot determine if the position has been reached.

Ah okay may have a look for a workshop manual, should be able to check values on our workshop diagnostics, did you come across any write ups on the issue by any chance with the values to check ? Or do you mean the values that need to be checked by the zf specialist diagnostics?

It doesn't need to be ZF diagnostics, just something that can read live values from the transmission. Essentially, you're looking for the gear position to be the one selected - also the one selected is correct for the position of the selector. I only have experience with Autologic and SDD so I can't really comment on IId or others suitability for JLR live value display.

Ah okay that’s interesting, I did have a brief look in the workshop and when changing between the gears neutral & park where correct however both reverse and drive where showing as ‘drive’ in the live data assumed that was correct as despite the fault it was still driving fine in both and showing correct on the vehicles display as p & r I suppose I should confirm that that is correct or should reverse display on the live data

P.s this is a universal reader but a good one so would imagine it should be reading correct but happy to purchase a dedicated lr diagnostics if anyone has a recommendation as from experience don’t thinkmit would be the last time it’s required 😂

Tom

I got my unit from Frongoch Range Rover, do an internet search and it will lead you to their ebay shop. It cost £250, and he knew his stuff. He said that if the unit was from a similar aged vehicle, mine actually was from a RRS, but the same year, it will work as plug and play, and it did.

The rest of the costs are down to who does it for you, where they get the new sump from, and what oil they choose to use.

As with most things, 'it depends' - do you have access to another (any brand) auto vehicle that you can confirm what the tool is showing in reverse? the stuff I use shows drive/reverse and the gear number when in drive but that doesn't mean yours will or can
