Battery issue, advice needed.

Hey folks I have an exide EA1000 that’s a little under 2 years old. A few weeks ago I started getting the faults on the lcd display saying programs not available etc that come up when the battery is low. They were intermittent so I didn’t charge the battery as I was doing decent long journeys. I should have known better. A couple of days ago went out to the car and it was so flat it didn’t start. Charged it up to half way according to my ctek max 7.0 charger, it started at this point, I drove 5/6 miles turned off, went shopping, started no issue. Left it overnight after a full charge totally dead in the morning.
So where do I start? Is it possible for a battery under 2 years old to be that dead with the sharp decline in temps or should I be looking for something that’s draining it overnight?

I'd get the battery tested. Is it in warranty ?

DO NOT buy another Exide!

NUMAX is a good budget brand.

Is your fridge switched off?- they are a battery killer on D3s if left switched on.

I’m no auto electrician, but I took it off charge, ctek said it was now full, got my bits together, spanner’s multi meter, torch etc and headed out to have a look.
12.22v as it sat disconnected, 11.95v connected to the car while it “woke up” no key in ignition, interior lights off etc.
Keys in, turn to position 2, 8v……

I guess you could charge it
Disconnect car.
Leave it overnight disconnected.
Measure voltage in morning. If less than 12.2v probably faulty?
Try connecting and see if it will start.

I’d be pricing up a battery

A battery is chemistry, it can get sulfated (dead) within a few hours, even when almost brand new..
Sulfating happens when deepcharged (everthing lower than 12v is deepcharge)

Warranty is legally only on 1 or two dead cells (10v or 8v or…) everthing in between like 11v / 9v etc after a full charge and an hour after that is sulfated and No warranty (normally)

Quite logical, because it is not the fault (deepcharge) of the battery manufacturer or supplier

As said, it is just chemistry (a battery)
 Best regards
Harold

I did 3 exides in about 3 and a half years, would be fine one day then completely dead the next. Now on a Yuasa and touch wood it’s been fine for 2 years now. Exides are just pants don’t buy another!

I’ve had 5 or 6 Excides on different vehicles in the last 5 years, all are still on the vehicles and holding charge, I do look after them and keep them fully charged Whistle

I thought my Excide had failed after 2 years but when i went to fit a new one i found i had a hairline crack in the negative battety clamp. With the bolt done right up you ciuld swivel the clamp on the battery post. I fitted the new battery and put the old one on my wifes car and its still going strong after 4 years.

As do I… the last battery actually failed mid way through a week of running Doncaster to Gloucester and back daily.
