Loose wheel nuts??

One of the many strange noises from my TDV6 D3 has gradually gotten worse and my early suspicion is of a knackered wheel bearing on the nearside front or rear. Anyway, I did a little roadside inspection and noticed that the wheel nuts seemed to feel a bit loose?!? This is the case on all 4 wheels, maybe 2 or 3 nuts I could 'wobble' with my fingers but certainly couldn't undo (the car wasn't lifted or anything).

The tyres have recently been rotated so all 4 wheels have come off within the last month so it's possible that they've not done them up properly but before I worry too much....are the outside of the wheel nuts (or lugs?....what's the difference!?!) meant to be able to wobble? I know this sounds like a daft question but looking online, they don't look like a simple solid bolt...it looks like there's a few parts to each bolt so it's possible that the inside is holding the wheel nice and tight as it should whilst the outer (and visible bit) normally sits looser.

Obviously I might be talking complete Censored but I did try to undo one of the 'loose' nuts with a socket wrench and it wasn't budging at all so couldn't be that loose!

Any ideas?

The original wheel nuts have a shiny metal cover over the steel wheel nut, cleverly designed to work loose and jam leaving you stranded at the roadside (along with a jack that doesn’t work) if you have a puncture.

Get rid as soon as possible and replace ALL the wheels (including the locking ones) with solid steel ones.. trust us on this it’s one of the best things you can do for your Disco!

Thanks Nige - I assume the nuts feeling 'loose' is the cap sat over the actual nut then? They were all replaced 15 months ago due to swelling I believe but I'll take your advice and replace with simple bolts

It's common that the covers can be a bit wobbly but it's not really a problem.
If the nuts do swell, carry a 23mm socket as well as the 22mm and then you can either replace them or hammer off the cover and put a set of 20 chrome (or black if that's your pref) covers from eBay for £6, noting that when removed you'll need to use a 21mm socket...but at least the 21mm socket is more common!

Thanks Highlands... good to know. The 22mm seemed to fit fine so hopefully no swelling yet but I think I may change them all before they do.
