D3 Headlight Switch Replacement

Got a dodgy headlight on/off switch on my 58 D3 GS. No auto light function.

If I replace light switch control with one equipped for auto headlights, are all the gubbins n wiring etc there already or would I have to retrofit sensors etc?

TIA

It'll work fine until you turn it to 'auto', so just don't turn it to auto Wink

Thought that might be the case Flatlander but wondered if all the gubbins was fitted at factory, just not switch.

Ordinary switch it is.

Cheers

You might have the wiring at the switch and for the rain/light sensor tucked away above the rear view mirror, the original S, SE & HSE tended to be wired for everything, later specifications usually had specific cabin harness' to save on costs.
If you have the wiring, then check the screen has the 'window' to mount the sensor in, if you have that, then once the rain/light sensor has been fitted & initialised, you can modify the CCF.

The auto lights come on too late anyway, so retrofit a waste of time

Is that an opinion, or measurement?
Auto lights come on at mandated light levels, from memory, on at 45-50Lux, off at 110-115Lux. There is an on delay of three seconds and an off delay of six seconds, both to prevent momentary shadows or passing under bridges etc. causing the lights to switch on and reflections etc. from turning them off too soon. So if yours are performing significantly outside of those measurements, then your sensor, windscreen or CJB could be the cause.

If it's an opinion, well, they're like @rrseholes, everybody has one - not everyone wants to see it though.

Everyone’s opinion on here (except yours) say they come on too late.

At least on my older jag I can adjust the level

I haven't expressed an opinion, jut reiterated measurements (as I remember them) - none of which really matters to me as I have Scandi DRL's enabled anyway.

Yet again, its your opinion that 'everyone' says they come on to late, unless you can point me to some sort of measurement....

Its telling that you have measured it, maybe researched it and then enabled full time headlights Rolling with laughter

I spent a lot of time in Scandinavia where they are mandatory. I got used to them and left them enabled.
Yes, I do tend to fact check before speaking/typing, you should try it sometime, you might find it 'illuminating'...

Actually living in Scandinavia, I’ve got the D3 light switch always turned to the auto position (fourth position, I believe). My xenons are always on when engine is on.

I think there have been some changes to the law since the D3s started coming off the production line as you do not need to have them on. It would be sufficient to have “positioning lights” or “daytime driving lights” (so “DRL”) on during daytime. In newer vehicles these would be just some kind of small LED strip.

Similarly, it seems nowadays to be legal to not have any rear lights on during day time and only lit them when braking. I find this very annoying but it is what it is.

Thumbs Up

Benefit of the auto possition and day light run lights is the the main beams will work when you request them

Yes, the function of DRL's has changed a lot, as has the legislation & type approval around it, many versions are high-intensity LED's with no focussing - not great when they're used as lighting after dusk... annoyingly, not all vehicles with DRL's incorporate or mandate auto switchover to night-time lighting.

The Disco3 version is basically front and rear marker (side) lights with dip Bi-xenons if fitted, or dip Halogen. Unless the auto lights are activated or the lighting switch is turned to 'headlights' then there is no fill-in lighting or swivelling of the Bi-Xenon, self-levelling is still operational though. Disco4 are different again!
