Fuel smell on idle

Morning,

I hope you're well.

I'm after advice please.
The Landy has a strong fuel smell on idle, I keep forgetting to ask about it, though this morning it's on my mind as it seemed to be very smoky as it sat on the drive warming up.

It's an 07 plate D3 with EGR removed - I do add Millers additive in the fuel each fill up.

I don't have a Gap tool, but am I wiser to buy one and try fix myself, or send to a garage for diagnostics?

Is there anything I should be looking at first, known issues/ fixes, as a way to resolve?

Many thanks for you time.

Elliott

You need to identify where the smell is coming from. Could it be the Fuel Burning Heater you can smell? It's been cold enough recently for the FBH to be running.
The other place to be checked is the injector leak off pipes on top of each bank of the engine. There are known cases of engine fires due to leaks here. Worth a check.

very smoky sitting on driveway clear indication your FBH isnt burning diesel very nicely or there is a leak on delivery to it as long as that smoke was coming from the front of the car Wink

Many thanks for your reply.
The smell seems to be from the exhausts, it's happened over the last few months, I just keep forgetting about it.
It's worse when cold.
This morning there seemed to be alot of blue smoke.

I'll check the engine area again to be sure.

All the best

The FBH seems to run ok with minor exhaust fumes.
Would any of the fuel for FBH end up in car exhaust if wasn't functioning properly?

Many thanks

Hello,

Checked it this morning, no real smoke like yesterday, so could have been the cold air that made me paranoid!

Still think there's a strong smell of Fuel, but will get it plugged in and see the output through injectors (looking in to threads on here it's one place to start)

I hope all's well

Also check injector values. You could be burning fuel in the wrong manner in one or more of the cylinders. If the problem gets worse the longer you idle, the more likely it might be injector related.

Just had six new injectors fitted after mine doing the same. Savings Account took a battering, though Big Cry
