Hi, out of interest how long do the rear bearings generally last?

How long is a piece of string?- most last the life of the car!It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Mechanic we've known for years in Glos has said he'll do the job for £50 cash if I brought the bearing... pretty happy with that compared to the other £400+VAT quote. DIY will have to wait for another day.
Can't seem to be able to find Timken bearing for the rear though?
With a mate like that I’d be changing both It can when others can't,

Well here's an interesting update...
My D3 is currently off the road following the rear wheel bearing replacements. I had ordered 2 x rear wheel bearings from Meyle:
Assumed they would be ok. Took it down to this guy to get them swapped out. Picked up the car and it was handling very oddly. Really unstable with small steering inputs, horrific on motorway. Dangerous.
Took the car home, jacked up rear wheels, back right had significant movement - edge of the tyre was moving between 0.5 and 1 inch when wobbled side to side and top to bottom. Wasn't the wheel nuts, couldn't see any movement in suspension - figure wheel bearing. Back left also had movement but not as bad, just slight.
Are the Meyle bearings I bought complete rubbish, or is the mechanic to be avoided at all costs... thoughts please

Something is very wrong there!
Did the (mechanic?) tighten the driveshaft nut? It's the driveshaft/stub axle/nut that keeps the opposed halves of the bearing tight together.
I'm sure Meyle bearings are not that bad from new.Richard

Yeah I checked the driveshaft nut too, it was extremely tight. I believe it needs to be 350Nm though I don't have a torque wrench that goes that high so not sure exactly how high it has been torqued. If it had been done to say, 250Nm instead of 350Nm, would that cause the wobble in the wheel? Or is it more likely the bearing has been destroyed by incorrect installation?

No, even if it was spanner tight it wouldn't rattle.
(Not suggesting you drive with spanner tight wheel bearing before anyone comments! )
Installing new bearings without damaging them is a careful process. Pressing on the outer race to insert, not using the inner race and bearings to press through.Richard

What a pain... did quite a bit of research to do the bearings myself, didn't in the end as I've nowhere to store the press if I bought one and it never occurred to me someone else would mess it up and destroy the bearing.
Feel like a bit of a pillock if that's what's happened. Poor old disco deserves better than that!

Take it back to whoever fitted them and tell him to sort it asap, Meyle bearings are as good as any. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I may pursue to get it sorted out this time (through sheer shame he should make it good), give the car a check over when I get it back, and from then on avoid like the plague and do whatever work I can myself. What a lesson... geez
