*Obligatory wife comment*
Hello enthusiasts.
I just picked up a 2008 TDV6 automatic for a good price. It's my second Land Rover after owning a Gen 1 Freelander some years ago. However a good price, comes at a cost. Bit of a paradox eh? This is because it comes with a couple faults.
One of those being a consistent low pitched whining when driving at all speeds.
This noise is barely noticeable until you reach 20mph and becomes louder as you increase your speed, but also seems to disappear when you turn left slightly?
I followed the principal of KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) and checked for fouling inside the wheel arches but didn't find anything obvious.
I did consider bearings but in my experience bearing whine gets worse when you turn the steering, not better.
I can also rule out the automatic gearbox being the source of the whine because of the noise disappearing with steering input thankfully.
It should not have anything to do with the power steering either as that would change with engine RPM's and not ground speed. (Worn pump etc).
That leaves the transfer box and differentials.
I have been browsing the forum for other posts mentioning noises such as this and there are plenty for sure, but none of which mention this additional layer of steering to the left fixing the noise.
Perhaps steering to the left changes the load distribution on one of the differential bearings which is why the noise disappears?
I planned to do all the fluids (gearbox, transfer box, front & rear diffs) on the drivetrain anyway as I always do a full service on any car I buy so hopefully that will do the trick.
Until my parts arrive I thought I'd pick some brains to pass the time and maybe someone who's had a similar experience can share their thoughts.
Thanks.

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me… get the wheels jacked and listen for grating when turning the wheel.. the bearings don’t make the noise you’d expect from another car.. if you check them at least you can rule them out… I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I will be doing some more thorough investigation soon so I will check them all when I get round to it. I need to go under it to get the transmission ID number anyway. Thanks
