New Tyres Time

Looking for recommendations for new tyres. Most of my driving is on road, towing a large caravan, but usually in the 50 to 70 bracket. Looking for speedy stopping in all weathers and a tyre that will last.

Just changing the rear pair at the moment.

If on road braking distances in all weathers is your top priority you’ll need to look at road tyres not All Terrains (AT). Although the later are likely to wear better.

Have a look at the Pirelli All Seasons. Thumbs Up

For what it’s worth I have Goodyear Wranglers HP all weather. Put them on winter just gone and very impressed. Pretty quiet as well. I am mainly on road but do go on single track, fields and I tow. Never had any issue. 👍

Scotland 2015 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Corris GreyDiscovery 4

After much deliberation and research I just pulled the trigger on a set of Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season in 255 50 20 size

Had a set of 18 inch Scorpion ATR’s and Scorpion Winters on my D3 and couldn’t speak highly enough of those tyres. Also never seemed to wear - massive mileage.

These new Scorpion Zero All seasons have an EU rating of Fuel Rating A, Wet Rating B and Noise A. Very similar tread pattern - almost identical - to the Scorpion Verde but the Verde rates at B, C, B v A B A

Also has the Pirelli Noise Control System (interior foam band which drive the A noise rating - only 3 or 4 DB lower than typical though)

I have a set of 20 inch Scorpion winters for my D4 but reckon these All Seasons would be ideal for someone who wanted to run the same tyre all year. If your almost exclusively on road, which I am also , bar a little farm tracks and field crossings, I couldn’t find a better option. Should arrive this week, then the proof will be in the pudding. Reviews suggest I should see a wee improvement in fuel, which is part of what I was looking to achieve.

Hope this is helpful

Thanks everyone for your contributions. All seasons quite appeal to me. Although a neighbour of mine also have Goodyear AT and swears by them. Decisions, decisions!

That chart is excellent - great work by Asbesrtross Thumbs Up

Pleased to see the Scorpion Zero Al seasons came out top rated for road based all season every time. Glad I didn’t miss a better tyre. But makes you think. How much extra should you pay to get an A rated tyre before teh fuel savings will never add up. The latest chart shows the Zero as as £240 each (I didn’t pay ANYTHING like that - but plenty places wanted that) but shows the Verde at £165 (I couldn’t find it for anything like that Laughing

On that basis I could have saved £300 by going for the Verde. That would pay for a couple of thousand miles of fuel Shocked

I’m a bit obsessive on tyres so no regrets but as in most things, there’s a balance to be struck

Plus 1 regarding @ Asbesrtross Bow down

@ Kummu24 , That’s a good point regarding price wise for good tyre , must confess I’ve budgeted £150 per corner which I think gives me a good quality tyre , ie the falken which seems to get good reviews

Still makes me cringe when seeing D3/4 that have been fitted with rubber band low profiles , plus for some reason seems more prevalent on RRS

I have finally had a full new set of Pirelli Scorpion ATR Plus fitted, after the last set delivered 47,000 miles. Whilst they aren't rated as high as the road only tyres I have found them to work well for the D4 and like the fact that they are reinforced etc. We tow a large twin axle caravan and they work a treat.
As a bonus I have to say they also look good!

I took the view that

1. where I live it's unlikely I'll see extreme low temperatures
2. it rains quite frequently
3. I've not been offroad in the 5 years I've had this D4
4. I've driven in "snow" once in about 5 years ... and only once in enough snow to cause any issues for anyone in 15 years

so I've fitted Uniroyal Rainsport 3 as they had a very good wet grip rating.

the latest version "Rainsport 5" looks to have an even nicer tread but couldn't get them due to covid disruptions when I needed to buy tyres.

They look like a directional tread BUT only have "inside/outside" sides specified.
