Changing a headlight lens

As per the title, has anyone managed to do this on a facelift Discovery 4? I see a few posts about the Discovery 3 and see powerful uk sell the lens on its own but they also say:

“We have not done this replacement ourselves yet.

The trickiest part is removing the old lens which is bonded into place.

With previous headlight upgrades we have had some success by baking the headlight assembly first at a low temp to loosen the bonding material around the old lens.”

Which says to me: don’t waste your time and money trying this, you are going to have to replace it anyway.

I bought a pair of new lights in the end and then began repairing my broken one when I had plenty of time on my hands. Not finished yet!

I’m sure it’s doable in a day. I’ve really dragged this one out! I didn’t buy the lens until I had the other one out and it all cleaned up as I was expecting to destroy it in the process!

It’s not often I’m right but I’m wrong again, the lens removal is PITA, despite two bake offs the glue / sealant and grommet refused to anything other than break at the polycarbonate edge and flatly refused to offer up the remains left in the lens body.
So that’s a write off and now a redundant lamp, time to find a new one Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

If your buying new and original, prepare yourself for a bit of a wait ( depending on which side it is) . LR waited 6 weeks for the delivery of one side when I needed them. About £1200 per light at LR dealerships.
Good luck, and thanks for sharing your experience.

Rather than stick them in the oven, might not a heat gun do the trick?

Heat guns do work but an oven gives a better all over heat, by the time you’ve gone all the way round with a heat gun it’s already started to cool… works well for any bits that are a little stickier..
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

But garfield2 isn't needing to get the lens off intact, so heatgun could be better as he can just work on one section at a time?
