Oil warning light on dash |
|
Hi. 2008 Disco3 4ltr V6 motor.
The red oil warning light on the dash flashes on briefly followed by a beep.
The local garage diagnosed it as a faulty oil pump switch. The the oil pressure checks out good. After replacing the switch (It took them two months to get a replacement) and resetting the codes, the problem is still there. They believe there may be a short in the wiring but don't know where to look. They had called the dealer but they are unable to advise other than taking my car in to them. The nearest dealership is an 8 hour return trip so I am at the mercy of small town Hawera mechanics. They do regularly work on Land Rovers so nothing strange about that.
The current status is they are reluctant to start stripping my car at my cost, so are trying to contact people in NZ & Australia to see if someone has experienced this problem - so far no luck.
The light & beep happens every time I use the car. It is always random in nature.
Any suggestions out there?

Yes it has happened before. Reported 3 or 4 times on here. So search hard.
Most likely fault is the dash board itself. Some tiny joints may need resoldering. (Dash contains imboliser so think first before you try yourself)
I think there was one case of a shorted wire. Can’t remember where.
You could cut the wire behind the dash to rule that in or out.
You could even run a new wire in temporarily after a few days to engine

I would check for any oil leak as from my experience check systems for oil are often fairly robust, the warnings could be doing just that, you have an actual pressure related problem?
I do not know if the upgraded oil pump post 2007 applies to petrol engines but Fords on lots of models recommend renewing oil pumps at certain service intervals, just a thought?

But was it checked when the warning lights were on?

Thanks. I did search, but the thread I found seamed to relate to the 2.7 (diesel engine?). Would this be the same for the petrol engine? If it is a dash connection fault, sounds like this is going to be an expensive fix.

If it’s the dash or wiring tdv6 problems would apply to you.
People do repair dashes.

Great! Thanks for the advise. I'll pass it on to the garage.

Hi. No. They suspected there is a faulty connection somewhere in the wiring to the dash.
Oddly, as I mostly only travelled locally for short distances at a time I tolerated this as an inconvenience. I cannot afford to allow the garage access to unlimited time to find the fault. Oil pressure is still fine.
What I did find is that I did a trip to Auckland a few weeks back (about 900km) and not once did the light come on and have had very few instances since then when the light came on. Perhaps the car had been crying to do a long trip
So, other than keeping an eye on the dash every time I drive I'm no longer worrying about it.

Another thread (a few hours ago) suggests the problem is with water getting in the car. On the right hand side pillar. Making a connector wet I think

Hi Kiwidisco
Did you get your issue sorted? Are you happy with your local garage in Hawera. I live in Kaimiro south of Inglewood, and am yet to find a garage in Taranaki who knows what they are talking about with Landrovers.
I've got the same 4.0L V6 petrol engine with intermittent (approx every 6 weeks) starting issues, where engine cranks but doesn't start first go. I've had a couple of scares when in town, where it's taken half dozen crank attempts, never been stranded but has knocked my confidence in the Disco3. After reading many threads on forum I'm not sure if it's an electrical issue or fuel related.
Would you be keen to compare notes, given you are a fellow Naki man?
Cheers Blake

Had a few issues with engines taking to long to start (non lr) and hot starts being the worst, all were crank sensors, one also played up when being driven but not all the time.
