Can you reprogram an old key from another car?
Hello,
I have an old key from an old Range Rover that got crushed same year as my disco 3, can I get this key reprogrammed to mine as one locksmith (the only one i've contacted) says this isn't possible.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sol

Hi
As far as I’m aware u can’t reprogram a second hand key that’s been used on another vehicle
Few companies on ebay that sell new keys, just need to get the blank cut and reprogrammed , needs to also be a 433Mhz frequency
Hope that helps

You domt actually reprogramme the key - you actually program the relevant ECU to accept the new key but I assume there are lock outs to stop a key from another Vin being used.

Features on the Disco 4 key depend on features of the Disco 4. So you cannot get features from Disco 4 key if your car does not have these features.
Secondly, Disco 4 keys are not the same as Disco 3 keys, so I would assume you cannot program disco 4 key to disco 3.

Whilst it's true that the car is programmed to accept keys, as new keys, which have no VIN information on them, can be bought online and successfully used, there seems no reason why an old key could not be used.
D3 keys should be fine, (subject to them being for the same territory and therefore of the same frequency), but I think that it could be optimistic to hope that keys for other models could be reused.
I might be wrong in some cases.

Disco 3 keys cannot be re-programmed, D4’s can, cheapest way is to by a new Chinese copy and program it, they can be purchased for around £25 from Eblag, use the search facility on the top of the site title page It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

With a D3, is there a maximum number of keys you can have programmed to the car?
I have 2 keys, can I have a third?

I think that number of slots for keys is 10. If that is true, you can heave up to 10 keys at one time.
