Thrust bearing?
Hi all
Noticed a whirring sound when sat in neutral if I put clutch down it stops.
Always been there. Just never addressed it. Also I notice a whirring sound when I pull off. Along side the sound of the engine I believe it may be related
I put a video on Facebook group and many say it’s the thrust bearing
I can not find any information online have searched YouTube here etc no how to videos anywhere
I’m wondering where I stand with it? Can I repair it or?
I’m broke asf and want to avoid going back to the mechanic sick of seeing them now

well it is a gearbox out job if it is the thrust bearing, and you may as well fit a full clutch kit when the box is out......so wont be cheap im afraid.

Thanks
So would you say the best action is to ignore it until the clutch goes? Or would ignoring it be catastrophic?Disco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

on other motors i have ignored them for years, i would imagine they get really noisy to the point you cant ignore it any longer before complete failure, i have never seen one actually seize..... but no experience at all with the disco, looks a pig of a job TBH

The thrust bearing is part of the concentric slave cylinder. As said above, you'd be mad not to do the clutch if you get as far as getting the gearbox out.Richard

When the clutch peddle is pressed the thrust bearing is under maximum load that is when it will be noisy if it’s failing, when the peddle is realised there is no load on the thrust bearing and it will not be rotating so there will be no noise from it.
If you have a noise when the peddle is not pressed IMHO the problem is not the thrust bearing, it could be a dry spigot bush but they usually screech rather than whirr.
If the clutch is not slipping I would live with it and start saving for a new clutch assembly and spigot bush which may be the cheapest part and don’t forget to lightly grease the spigot bush on re-assembly, it may save the job of stripping down again for the sake of a few pounds. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Cheers
There’s not enough info online for me to do it myself. I’m terms of video. And I presume reading diagrams and learning crazy stuff for a one time job is probably not worth it in comparison to paying a mechanic
I’ll ignore it for now, knowing it can be repaired as and when. Instead of being catastrophic.
Thanks again allDisco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7
