Anybody running 255 60 20? |

I'm considering buying the above in an ongoing mission to improve the ride on my car. Not sure if these will potentially cause issues? It's a toss up between higher profile 20" tyres, or completely swapping out for 19" wheels.
Car is a standard D4 HSE

I don’t know for sure, but I’d be very surprised if a 255-60-20 tyre didn’t rub somewhere. I don’t recall anyone running that size.
Nicest ride in my opinion is on 255-60-18’s. You’ll need an aftermarket, not LR, 18” rim though. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

it would fit if you do land rover passion lift rods or simular. I have the same dia tyres as this 31.9 inch and it would rub at normal height. (255 60r20 would be 32inch o/a dia)
I presume you are going for new defender style tyres?

Thank you both for your replies. I'm thinking perhaps this might potentially open up a tin of worms for the 20", so my next question would be what is the highest profile of tyre that can be run on a 19" rim without issue? As much as I would like to drop down to an 18" rim, I want to stick with standard LR wheels really.

its not really your rim that is the problem it is the overall diameter - you could get an 18inch rim and stilll buy tyres too big. i would choose what you want for wheels and then compare the tyre size against the standard setup. anything above a 30 inch diameter i would go with a lift kit.

I'm using Yokohama tyres (255/55 R19 111H XL , RPB (So) Geolandar A/T (G015)) on LR 18" rims which are good all year round & IMHO provide a much better ride than the D4's I have ridden in on 20" & 22" rims.

The sidewall depth on 255-50-20 is 5 inches, on 255-60-18 it is 6 inches.
So the same 1 inch sidewall increase as going from the stock 255-50-20 to 255-60-20, but with no rubbing issues etc. Plus it's actually a standard size for the D3 and the early D4 (2.7L engine), so insurers are happy, at least in my experience.

Just ordered a set of 255/60/r20 but after reading this now worries they won't fit my d4, has anyone managed it?

Quite a few different replies with differing results! I definitely don't want to go ahead and buy these, then end up with rubbing issues. It's a toss up between changing for smaller wheels and getting higher profile tyres for mine. Ideally I would just like to replace the tyres. Perhaps I could compromise and go for 255 55 20. The vehicle is completely standard and I don't plan on modifying it in anyway.

255 55 r20 should fit fine without lifting or modding the vehicle

Do you intend to go off road at all?
There’s a very limited choice of AT tyres in 255 55 20. Just Goodyear Duratrac, Falken Wildpeak and GG AT3.
In 255 55 19, which has the same sidewall height as 255 55 20, you are spoilt for choice.
The first modification I used to do to my D4’s was to remove the 20” rims and fit
19” or 18” ones. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I'm in exactly the same position. Standard disco 4, want to keep the 20inch wheels but get the biggest tyres possible without having to lift etc.
Seen lots of views but was hoping someone might have tried it. Looks to be 50/50 with the biggest issue being the spare wheel location size. Guess I will just have to wait until next week when the arrive 🙈

I don't but I hate how the low profile bangs on every bump. The Duratrac are what I have order but with a 60 profile (255/60/r20)

Regardless of if they'll fit or not, with Duratracs and indeed any AT tyre, there's a compromise with on road braking distances, mpg and noise when compared to a road tyre.
Duratrac's are the most aggressive of the All Terrain tyres, closer to a Mud Terrain in my opinion.
If you don't go off road or only occasionally, a tyre such as the new PIRELLI SCORPION ZERO ALL SEASON in 255-55-20, would be ideal and is Land Rover marked. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
