Tyre size / type
Hi All looking for some guidance on tyres, need to replace present Pirelli’s on D4 with maybe General Grabber (if not too noisy) AT3 but not sure on size, original size is 255/50/20 but have seen some people increase profile to 55 and width to 265 or 275, questions are does the extra height/ width make much difference and would they still fit in spare wheel position? And what’s the road noise like? Thanks in advance Gid.

Understand tyre sizes so you can make an informed decision.
255 is the width of the tyre in mm.
50 is the profile size as a % of the width.
20 is the hole in the middle.
So any adjustment to the width or profile or both will result in a taller, wider or taller and wider tyre.

I’m running AT3s at 275/45/20.
That size equates roughly to the same sidewall height (& rolling radius) as the 255/50/20.
No noticeable noise with these tyres ….. and a great all round choice for the Disco.
Be aware that the AT3 is offered at different speed ratings, I’d suggest going for the higher rating.
No real reason (apart from the obvious), it’s just because you can.

Also bear in mind that LR used 8.5" wide wheels with 255 tyres, and 9.5" wide with 275 tyres.

Same as ronp I ran AT3's at 275/45/20 and they would fit in the wheel well but it was a squeeze ! More of an issue to get down than up surprisingly !I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I couldn't get a 255/55x20 in the well, but a 275/45x20 fits.

Hi All thanks for all the reply’s but I have been reading tooo much stuff on tyre size and would like to know if fitting 255/55/20 general grabber AT3’s will cause any rubbing issues? As don’t want to buy then regret it 🫤
