Michelin Latitude Extra Load M&S Tyres
Hi,
I am thinking of getting a set of Defender wheels with these tyres already on, but I wondered if anyone had them and whether they're any good in the snow? Planning a trip to the Alps or similar next year, so want some winter tyres potentially. I currently have Duratracs on, but I am thinking M&S tyres should be better?!?Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

I have not used those tires, but just go carefully because in may places you have to have REAL winter tires (i.e. with the 3 peak snowflake symbol, not just the m+s symbol).
I love the duratracs, but the are not "winter rated" for Europe, so in Germany (for example) they would not be accepted in wintery conditions.
I don't think that the tires you are suggesting have the 3psf symbol either.
I had problems finding real winter rated tires for my D5, and went for the GG AT3s in the end, and they have been excellent so far.

Hi, thanks for the advice. Ironically I was considering the GG AT3 when getting my Duratracs! Should've thought that one through.

hello, I'm about to finish a set of LATITUDE after a lot of km with them, approximately between 70 and 80,000 or more, from year 17 until now, the first thing I can say is that they are not at all tires of winter and they are not qualified as such either, this Michelin are only M+S ones, and here you need to have the 3 peaks and the snowflake on the flanks, so that the civil guard allows you to circulate without chains in snowy conditions and they do not have such a symbol. For the rest I give them an outstanding in everything, they are magnificent wheels in in the wet, in the dry, and in snow too, they are very little noisy and very long-lived in good condition. I recommend them 100%, but not as winter tires, of course, because they are not. Greetingslost in translation!

I fully understand your situation... That is why I now run duratracs in the summer months, and GG AT3s in the winter.

I have these tyres fitted and would nit get them again, they are very quiet compared to my duratracs but dont give the same amount of grip. I get wheel spin on wet roads if i pull away fast or boot it too hard on a roundabout and they are usless off road.Andrew

Which Latitude tyre is it, there are three Latitudes listed on the Michelin website.
The only M+S rated one is the Alpin which is a full winter tyre.
The Latitude Cross is their ATR and isn't M+S rated.
The Latitude Sport isn't M+S rated either, it's a summer high performance tyre.
I have Latitude Cross's fitted and they have been great so far.

Mud and Snow (M+S) isn't a rating as such - there is no testing required to achieve it. The manufacturer can decide whether to mark a tyre M+S and it's usually just based on the geometry of the tread - a more open tread pattern being enough for most. The rubber compound won't be one designed for winter conditions.
If one wants / needs winter performance then a tyre carrying the 3MPSF symbol is required. This is a controlled rating and is only acquired once the tyre has passed defined tests showing that it actually works in winter conditions. The rubber compound will be designed for winter conditions too.
M+S won't cover you in areas where winter tyres are required by law.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Hi RRSTDV8, I'm aware M+S isn't an official rating, but was just using the word rating as an indication of what Michelin have on their website.
i.e. for the Latitude Alpin they have M+S and the 3PSF symbol. No M+T with their other LAtitudes.
So they clearly rate M+S in some way.

Hi, it was more a general comment than a response to you. I noted that the OP wanted M+S for use in the alps and this wouldn't be sufficient in winter - and I wanted to explain the difference.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Could I please remind you that M+S is not a winter tire.
If you are planning on going to the Alps skiing, or driving in Germany after the 1st November, then an M+S tire would not be sufficient.
