Theoretical Question: electric oil primer pump? |

I'm just curios......... why are there not more cars with eletric oil pumps?
And especially on our loved D3's it could solve many problems. The electric oilpump could already start and prime the engine when the Glow Plugs get power. This would help the main bearings to last much longer.
Or the pump could still run after shutting down the car and cool down the turbocharger.
And if i spin my thought further:
And why is nobody building a aftermarket primer pump?
There could be an additional small oil primer pump parallel to the mechanical pump. just to prime the engine and the oilpump before cranking.
Just in my head, this would be easy.
A small oil-line from the sump to a small valve, to shut down the flow as soon as the engine is running, afterwards a small oil pump, and return the oil thru the port on top of the engine where the oil pressure switch is located.
This should fill the mechanical oilpump and maybe even the whole system within seconds.
Or a pressure reservoir? Just a small closed can which get filled by oil when the engine is running. as soon as the engine stops a valve closes the pressured-can. On startup the valve can open with the glow plugs and prime the engine.........again thru the pressure-switch inlet.
just my thoughts.
maybe someone else has already done it. or someone else knows why nobody does it.

I knew I couldn't be the first one to think about something like that.
@NJSS: Have you finally done it?
The accusump system looks mature. A little bit expensive and over engineered for my purpose but really mature.
I searched for informations about the oil gallery, and where the oil is running thru the engine, but couldn't find anything.
Any Ideas where to find that info?

It will end up leaking, just about any oe and non oe oil/hyd pipe will end up leaking sooner or later.
There is also the possible problem of level checks.
