Well that’s good news the bike rack works with D3
On the D2. Did you have the tow ball attached. Maybe it managed to get an earth through that

RE D2 I tried it this morning without hitching up (just electrics) and it worked fine.
I am still a bit puzzled if I'm honest.

This might sound odd but i had what looked like a short on applying brakes with lights on , left hand brakelight went out on application but worked fine without the lights on. It turned out to be a dodgy brakelight/ sidelight bulb. The bulb looked absolutely fine but when i checked its operation and touched the bulb it went out , touched it again and came back on!!. Swapped the bulb for another and problem solved. It seemed as if the bulbs, connections did not connect properly.
Might be worth you checking all bulbs in the cars light clusters for good contacts, especially the brake/ side light bulbs.
P.S wear tinted glasses or sungalsses when looking at the bare brakelight its a bit dazzling  1996 Defender -died (now in landrover heaven😇)chassis to ashes , rust to dust !
