DISCO 3 Overlanding...Good Idea?

Dear All,

I've always wanted to plan an overloading trip to Iceland and specifically I want to do it in a Disco 3. I have previously owned Freelanders and am currently the owner of a Range Rover SDV6. I've always loved the D3 and was always on the hunt for a good one. As I live in Germany, most of the D3s are TDV6s. Currently I am looking at a D3 with around 180k km (110k miles) on the clock but has a series of mechanical overhauls done by a reputable LR specialist (but still original engine).

Now really its down to the question regarding the crankshaft issues... Are the failure rates really that high?

England 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Auto Bonatti GreyDiscovery 3

I think the crank failures were more on the D4, the oil pump is the issue with the D3. But I would assume you'd change the belts so can get the oil pump done at the same time. I don't know if you've watched any of their videos, but Land Rover Time on YouTube did a really interesting video on the upgraded oil pump.

Spun bearings can happen on a tdv6…..

@180k in km’s i would put on a new oilpump, oem FomoCo
And new bearing shells if overlanding is the goal….

If the engine is otherwise ok, those measurements should do to have a realiable engine IMHO

“Normal” mainentance by default and maybe a EGR removal/blaking, or proper EGR clean if german TUV is a concern regarding a blanked egr system..

I'm probably one of the least knowledgeable people on here, but from what I've read it seems that the crank failure is more common on the D4 3.0, but as I say that just from what I've read, no experience or technical knowledge.

You're welcome for the information. This forum and the FB groups have been a godsend for me and many others, hopefully you'll find the same!

Thanks so much. oil pump is new and EGR is also sorted. So I guess it looks like a green light!
