Well its good to be back

Evening folks, so after selling my disco 3 back in 2015 and going over to the dark side (Honda) I missed my old disco that much Ive bought another - 2007 SE and it sure feels good to be in it and back on the site after my extended absence. I could still log back in but all my old posts have gone !

Anyway, after all that, my latest acquisition has had a replacement engine fitted, which runs fine. The problem is the 2 inch play in the steering wheel. Track rods look ok. I've spoken to the chap I bought it off and he said its possible a shim dropped out of the steering when the body and chassis parted in prep for the new engine. I've had a look at the point where the rod comes through the bulk head beneath the brake servo and can see a bit of movement. So...... where would I get some shims from? is this an easy fix.

Many thanks

Matt

Jack one corner up and check the wheel as you are inspecting a tie rod for play. Do this on both sides. If you have play on both sides, it’s indicative of a bad steering rack. It’s helpful if you can either watch the steering wheel or have a partner watch it for movement while you handle the drive wheel/tire. You are trying to monitor how much play is in your steering system before the steering wheel moves. Even when locked, the steering wheel will move some.

I would still inspect your tie rod ends and inner tie rods before moving on to a rack swap. Tie rods wear much more quickly than a steering rack.

I had an alignment shop diagnose a bad steering rack on another vehicle recently. It was in fact both tie rods failed, which I diagnosed and replaced myself when confirming their inspection. I mention this because worn racks, inner tie rods, outer tie rods (rod ends), and steering linkage all basically result in the same problem, which is play in the steering wheel. It’s necessary to check them all independently before identifying one as the problem.

The lower column sliding joint has shims, i would guess they forgot to disconnect it when they lifted the body and pulled the joint apart
