Run its as it is, carry a few 2p coins and the tools to disconnect the egr pipes egr valve end and you will alway be able to get home, yes there will be lights on, but if it gets you home who cares?

or try some EGR cleaner fuel additive ? to clean it out before things get too bad

I know you don't like spending money, Laughing but yes it costs £180 inc vat. New EGR's will cost a lot more and they'll have to be done repeatedly, especially if short journeys a regular feature of the car's usage.

Cheapie crappy ones from yonder far flung places will pack in sooner, much much sooner.
