Cause of front brake disc wear

I've overhauled the brakes on the rear of the D3 - discs, pads, handbrake shoes and calipers.

Bleeding everything I noticed that the front brake discs are, embarrassingly, in appalling condition. I have already got new pads and discs (ordered the same night I clocked the state of the existing ones) but I got to wondering as to why they get in this state? There are circular rusty patches around the inside of each where the pad should wear.

Do front calipers need changing as frequently as the rears seem to? Why else do the discs wear so poorly? I can put some pics up tomorrow when I change them.

The brakes on most cars are set up 60/40 IIRC, so the front brakes do get more load. And with the Disco being a big heavy beast, they do take quite a beating. So the front discs and pads will need to be changed more often than the rears, just as in most cars.
As for the uneven wear, I feel that this is quite common. I've changed lots of discs and pads over the years, and once they start to go bad, the wear gets worse and more uneven, plus your calipers aren't what they used to be, and the pins might stick slightly and so on. It all adds up in the end, unfortunately.

Thanks for that. Its just such heavy wear it surprised me I guess. The 110 and D2 are never this bad but I take your point about the weight of the vehicle.

I've got new sliders and pins as well as pad carriers so all that will be done as well.

Haha.

I have an overdrive on the 110. Its happy enough at 85 on the motorway (and thats a 200tdi). It also does more heavy towing than the D3.

i have been driving my d3 for eight years now and my d4 for three years as well my experience with the brakes is that they last for 2x pad changes then on the third you need discs,i have always used genuine parts but lately i have been using quality aftermarket parts and these look to be needing changing sooner,it looks like non genuine pads seem to give the discs a harder time than the genuine pads

as a ps ive been driving for 40 years now and as far as i can remember I've never changed the brakes on anything ive owned as i am a very gentle brake user and used to suffer more with glazed discs/pads from light braking until i got the disco's Laughing
 please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick,thankyou

Car stood much during the first lockdown?
Standing unused wrecks discs and calipers.
