Tow ball size

Hi. New to this forum, my first question. I'm in New Zealand. On my disco 3 I have the US style square box tow hitch. Vehicle was originally registered in Japan, and they must have same towing set ups as US. In NZ we have 1&1/7 size tow balls. I'm looking to buy a swann neck tow bar either LR or after market from UK site or E-bay. Are UK balls 50mm, if is the ball able to be removed so I can swap for 1,7/8 which is what's on my boat trailer. Cheers Blake

Typo on my post. NZ tow balls standard size is 1&7/8 inch.
Cheers Blake

It depends on the style of tow bar. I have the standard LR hitch which has a square receiver into which the tow bar fits. You can change the tow ball to suit your own use. Some UK versions had a "J" shape that fitted into the standard hitch and had the ball as part of it. This cannot be changed. Here in Oz 50 mm is the standard with 70 mm for towing larger than 3.5 tons.

I actually have a square tow bar (Super Cheap Auto), but it's slightly smaller, bit of free play, flops around. I've tried padding it out with 2mm rubber. Boat trailer has Trojan coupljng, common brand in NZ which is 1 7/8. My caravan is English made Bailey which has 50mm ALKO coupling, so I have to swap tow balls depending on what I am towing.
