I intend to refurbish my FBH. Whilst I'm doing this I intend to fit another unit brought from ebay to keep the car happy. My question is this - if I buy another unit to swop into my car is it plug and play or will it need coding to work?

2010 RRS was just a simple swop, plug & play.

Its easier just to bypass the coolant hose with a joiner and refurbish the original unit.
It doesnt take long to srip clean and put back together.Andrew

Yup, just done this over the weekend. Hardest part personally was loosing the clamp for the exhaust (have to reach up behind the arch liner). Took in into the utility room and cleaned it up during the evening. Pretty straight forward. Mine didn't seem to be that coked up, but after a clean, the fbh was working again. thats great thanks gents.
I'm pushed for time so my service of my own FBH will take sometime.... It sounds like Fuel Burning Heaters are not coded - a replacement will be plug and play?

Why do you need to do anything with yours? Has it failed or something?

Running fine at the moment. I intend to service it over the winter. My plan is to buy another to install whilst it is being serviced. I dont have the ability to code another FBH - if it needs coding???

If it is running fine….. overhauling or even cleaning is not a smart idea….
Really… especially in a rather young motor like yours…
And i have only more than 20 years experience with FBH of all kind of brands
As long as they run a minimum of 10 mins, EVERY time they start… the only thing who can fail is the glowplug (or ecu (almost never happens)or the dosingpump (also almost never happens) all 3 have nothing to do with cleaning…
Bottomline; if it runs ok, stay away from it and take care of it by running it everytime 10mins or more…Best regards

if there running ok and are used correctly for longer than 10 minutes, any carbon build up will be burnt off and it will keep itself clean.
As Harold has said many times its short journeys of less than 10 minutes that cause these units to soot up.Andrew

This thing is so unreliable it has its own and dedicated forum section

No other Discovery component has its own section......

TBH….
It is maybe the most misunderstood part…
But not unreliable
I worked with them since 1998…
Seen hundreds of them, maybe 1000 and different brand FBH’s i. All sorts of brands of motors. I think i know what i am talking about
And… My crankshaft mainbearing and so the engine was gone after 100k mls…. But the FBH still works fineBest regards
