EPB Failure
Hi
I found a ton of information about jammed EPB's. But non of it describes what happens with my EPB.
It says Handbrake failure in the display and doesn't un-jamm with the iiD Tool.
But when i get the car into drive, and give it a short push, it seems to release the brake..... it runs freely. even if I go into neutral, its rolling completely free.
The error is still on the dash.
and when I remove the car key it sounds as usual when the brake tightens.
The error stays on the dash. and I cant release the handbrake with the button when i restart the car.
but again, just a short push in drive or reverse it seems released.
is this normal? any ideas?
can I drive with it? and deal with that problem later? At the moment its freakin cold outside.
Or will I destroy it even more?
best regards
Roland

It might not be jammed it could be a sticking cable but more likely seized arm on one of the PB shoes, its not the best time of year to be outside playing with cars but better to investigate it now than leave it be.D4 GS let the retro fit begin

Miiiiight be the switch. EPB comes of two ways, one manually via switch, the other automatically when car pulls away (for hill starts) if it’s working correctly on the second then switch sounds suspect. Assuming you can put the break back on normally when you park up?2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

No i cannot ACTIVATED or deactivate the Brake with the Switch.
But after the removal of the Key, IT engages the Brake correctly.

I’d say check the plug to the switch, if that ok then swap the switch out, fairly cheap and 5 minute job(in the warm of the cab) Sounds like epb is working perfectly, just not letting you tell it what to do 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

Thanks! I will check the connector tomorrow morning.
the fault code in the iiD is:

and if I go to the Live values, The state of the switch is just Error:

I couldn't find a live value for the state of the brake....if it is engaged or not.
but I found the the current of the motor. this shows around 5 Amps when I start driving and the brake releases.
could really be the switch.
The whole thing started when the car was down on the bump stops. I did some minor repairs in the engine bay ( changed the glow plugs.......again ) after that it didn't want to release the brake.
Are there any cables running thru the engine bay?? but there are not more or less other faults than usual.
I'm too tired at the moment to think straight. Let's see what the next morning brings!
Thanks so far! I will keep you updated.
best regards

Hi
Plus 1 ^^^^
Hope u don’t mind me adding but ur battery is extremely flat , would give it a good charge overnight , should be around 12.6 Vdc with the engine off
U do have connectors that run to the EPB that as u look at the disco on the right hand side, by the rear wheel , on top of the chassis rail just to the right of the compressor
From the engine bay , right hand side as u look at the landy go down by the turbo under the front wheel arch liner , past the compressor and onto those big connectors near the back
Hope that helps a little and see how it is after giving the battery a good charge

Plus know ur in very good hands , just found this which I hope may also be useful , just press download after opening it
The parking brake module monitors for the following types of fault in the parking brake switch system. If a fault is detected, the parking brake module stores a related fault code:
l Short circuits between a pull-down transistor in the parking brake module and battery voltage. l Broken wires and microswitches.
l Plausibility.
The parking brake switch has a degree of in-built redundancy. If a single microswitch fault is detected the parking brake module can still determine the operating state of the parking brake switch. Short circuits or multiple failures cause the parking brake module to disable the parking brake switch for the remainder of the ignition cycle. The parking brake module also disables the parking brake switch if a plausibility fault occurs. However, since plausibility faults are usually caused by incomplete operation of the parking brake switch, the parking brake switch is re-enabled if the parking brake module subsequently establishes a plausible operating state.
If a single microswitch fault is detected, the parking brake module signals the instrument cluster to illuminate the amber parking brake warning indicator. On vehicles with the high line instrument cluster, the parking brake module also signals the instrument cluster to display a message advising there is a parking brake fault. During an apply actuation, the parking brake module also signals the instrument cluster to flash the red parking brake warning indicator.
For all other fault types, the parking brake module signals the instrument cluster to illuminate the amber parking brake warning indicator, and, on vehicles with the high line instrument cluster, to display a message advising the parking brake has a fault and is not functioning. If it makes an apply actuation, the parking brake module signals the instrument cluster to flash the red parking brake warning indicator for the remainder of the ignition cycle.
On the next ignition cycle, the warning indicators and the messages are only activated if the fault is still present, although the fault code is retained by the parking brake module until cleared by T4.

I changed the glow plugs before I took this picture, and did some testing with them. I guess thats the reason for the low voltage.
now its back at 12,8V
I checked the connectors in the rear left section above the frame. There plastic housing has some cracks, but they have good connectivity.....and the cables coming and going to the connectors look ok. no corrosion visible.
I have a lot of wiring diagrams and repair books, but what I couldn't find is a plan for the wiring harnes......where the cables are running. and where are the connectors located and so on.
Where are the cables from the switch are going?
The error code stays the same when I disconnect the switch completly.
So my guess is that the wiring of the switch broke somewhere during my repair of the glow plugs. I see no reason why the switch itself should be defect at the same time when i did the glow plugs.
But is there any chance to test the switch itself? I tried to measure on the 6 pin connector, but it seems that there are no real switches connected.......i guess it just CAN data runing thru them.

Hi
Glad the battery is now all charged , have found some pictures of the loom, assume urs is left hand drive , looks like that switch plugs into a connector at the back of the centre cubby box, then I think it runs on ur drivers side and out to the rear drivers side chassis into that large connector , finally onto the EPB module itself
Hopefully it’s just a bad switch , just thought ref the ABS module, know a lot of wires go through that so wonder if that’s been disturb , have u tested ur can us yet as included it just in case it’s useful to u
Hope that helps

Thank you very much for the pictures.
I managed to measure each section by its own. so I found the defect element.
One wire broke directly in the "cable feed-thru" next to the connectors in the back. where the cables runs into the cabin.
An absolutley lovely location to repair a broken wire at minus 5°C

But its working now!!! THANK you very much!

Does anyone know a source for Land Rover connectors? or landrover pins?
I would like to do it properly, but i couldn't find new pins for all connectors.
best regards
